After a successful first year in charge, jiva kept things improving at the club. 2005 saw further increases in performers - some returning after many years away and newcomers arriving because the publicity and grapevine were confirming that Ashington Folk Club was on the up and up... The investment in new PA gear, the friendly welcoming atmosphere, attentive audience and the No Smoking policy helped ensure everyone had a good time.
The 2004 spotlight nights had proved popular, so regular performers were encouraged to do either a full or shared spotlight night where they had the opportunity to showcase their talent. It was great to see some of our people grow from timid floorsingers to confident performers on stage.
Another change was the re-introduction of an admission charge - we didn't bother with having someone at the door to collect money, but left it to individuals to chip in (suggested amount was only £1) by putting their contribution in a bag by the door... the term coined for this was 'It's in the bag!' ... The money generated, added to the modest raffle profits, allowed us to purchase a mini-disc recorder to record each night - from July onwards it was possible not only to read a review of the night and see photos, but also to listen to soundbites of the performers!
