6th October 2005

Another great night - a fine crop of performers, a friendly atmosphere, cheap beer... what a mix.

Enjoyment guaranteed...

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer.

1
Starting the night, Ricky Silvester played mandolin and sang 'John Barleycorn'. He followed this with 2 jigs on the violin 'The Bride's Favourite' and 'Clancy's Fancy'.

Listen

2
Dave Donohoe was next. He sang  'High Time' by Kevin Robinson, and then the lovely Sting song 'Fields of Gold'.

3
It was second visit for Sue Bardsley. This time she started with the Dylan song 'Boots of Spanish Leather', finishing with a smashing rendition of 'Plaisir D'Amour'.

Listen

4
Jack Hakin
is amazing. Not only does he yodel but he whistles too! He began with Slim Whitman's 'China Doll' and followed with 'I Hear That Lonesome Whistle Blow' by Hank Williams.
5
Ably accompanied by Dave Donohoe on guitar, Kevin Robinson sang the Dylan classic 'Knocking On Heavens Door'. He then did his own composition, 'Easy Living'.

Listen

6
Finishing the 1st half
Keith Jones amused us with two Jake Thakray songs, 'Leopold Alcocks' and the very popular 'Sister Josephine'.

7
Jimmy and Carol got the 2nd half underway with the Nanci Griffiths song 'Lone Star State of Mind' and then sang the lovely Irish song 'My Lovely Rose Of Clare'.

Listen

8
Self-penned song 'Going Nowhere' was the first song for Ben Yeowart which he followed with the very short Lennon/McCartney song 'Her Majesty's A Pretty Little Girl'. You just never know what to expect from this fellow!
9
 Fresh from last month's Spotlight
Tony Hamblin was next with a traditional night visiting song. He then did an unaccompanied  version of an American Folk/Ozark song.

Listen

10
In his usual warm and unassuming manner Alex Okon played two gentle classical guitar pieces,
'Habanera' and 'La Grima'.

Listen

Listen

11
Vince Carr  began with the Tim Buckley song 'Phantasmagoria In Two' and then played an instrumental piece on guitar based on a tune by an Italian clarinetist. (We didn't catch the name, so you'll have to ask Vince.)

Listen

12
Next up was
Peter Murphy with the Robin and Barry Dransfield song 'Rout Of The Blues'. Then, in more contemplative style, he sang 'Mr Bo-Jangles'.
13
Without Al, the other half of Old English, Peter Cryer sang 2 of his favourite traditional songs. First was 'As I Walked Out' and then 'Lord Franklin'.

Listen

14
To finish the night we had Jim Wigfield, also a recent spotlighter. First was a chilling self-penned unaccompanied song 'Do We Know You'. And then to send us all home to sweet dreams he finished with 'Scarlet Ribbons'.

Listen

14 acts, 28 songs and tunes - another very warm night in a crowded Folk Bar. If you weren't there, you missed a grand night - get yourself along... we're sure you'll enjoy yourselves.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

Phew!
What more can we say?
