1st September 2005

More newcomers, and many residents/regulars too. Great atmosphere. Lots of good performances. What more could anyone ask? (A room with more space, maybe? Ah well, we can dream...)

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer.

Alan Bailey got the night off to a fine start with two tunes on his Northumbrian Pipes - 'The Gentle Maiden' and 'Spinning Wheel'.

Next we had Geoff Ridley, a newcomer to the club . He sang the Kate Wolf song 'Give Yourself To Love' and then 'Maisie (Hanging By A Thread)'. We look forward to his next visit...

Another first time visitor to the folk club was Sue Bardsley who gave us
the Joan Baez song 'Diamonds & Rust' and followed this with Leonard Cohen's 'The Partisan' (with French thrown in!). Great - and let's hope she comes again too!

Listen

4
Jack Hakin
was in Hank Williams mood tonight and sang 'You Win Again' and 'I'm A Driftin Cowpoke' with some fine yodelling as well!
5
Taking the cue from the French earlier from Sue, Jim Wigfield sang 'Doucement (Gently)' inviting us all to join in. He then followed this with his own song 'Teabags' telling us it's the nearest thing to a love song that he'd ever written.

6
'That Time Of Life', a new poem from Ann Lunam-Cowan, kept us amused as she recounted anecdotes about forgetting things and getting words mixed up. Our MC knows all about that!

Jimmy and Carol closed the first half with bluegrass and harmony. They sang 'Lord I Hope This Day Is Good' by Don Williams followed by the Laurie Lewis song 'Those Texas Blue Bonnets'.

Listen

8
Starting the second half we had yet another first time performer at Ashington Folk Club. Keith Blackburn sang his self-penned song 'Green Tweed' and followed this with 'One More Day'. Maybe he will also return...
9
Peter Murphy gave a fine rendition of 'Fields of Peterloo' followed by a humorous unaccompanied song called 'The Portugese'.

Listen

10
Back from his holiday Dave Donohoe began his set with the lovely Sting song 'Fields of Gold' and followed this with '1000 Miles From Home'.

Pat Yeowart was in great voice tonight. She gave us impressive performances of 'Summertime' and Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue'.

Yes, Jimmy Towler was up next. jiva didn't get to sing, but in his best Geordie accent Jimmy recited his poem 'Ashington Folk Club - Unsung'. It's about the hard work involved in running the club and how on warm nights it feels like being in a sauna!

13
In great form John (no waffle) Campbell played some cool blues licks as he sang 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out' and 'Jazz Woodbine'.

Listen

14
Ben Yeowart finished the night for us with two of his own numbers - a new one called 'Going Nowhere' and 'My Best Friend', which he introduced as 'an honest song'.

14 acts, 23 songs and tune sets and 2 poems - great variety, great entertainment, great fun. But don't take our word for it, come along and see for yourself... you're sure of a warm welcome.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

Thanks to everyone...
Another sizzling night!
