3rd November 2005

Another great mix of traditional, contemporary, self-penned, acoustic, electric and unaccompanied - it's all at Ashington Folk Club.

We had a great time. Lots of performers and listeners too - new faces are always welcome - so don't be shy, come in and join us.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer.

1
Mike Jessop has played at the Club with Jane's Alley but tonight was his first solo spot. He got the night off to a grand start with the Allan Hull song 'Marshall Riley's Army', followed by Dylan's 'I Shall Be Released'.

Another first - Ellen Morgan has sung at Ashington before, but tonight was the first time we'd heard her own songs. First  'Hell Or Heaven', and then 'Denim Eyes And Dancing Fingers'.

Cowboy songs abound when Jack Hakin
is on. Tonight he sang the Slim Whitman song 'The Cattle Call' (with some whistling too) and finished his spot with 'Kathleen'.
5
Sue Bardsley was in fine voice with the traditional song 'House Carpenter' and then 'Not Lonely' by Eliza Gilkyson.

Departing from his favourite Jake Thackray songs, Keith Jones began with 'The Devil And The Farmer's Wife' and then sang the Tom Lehrer song 'The Irish Ballad' (Rickety Tickety Tin) - all very gruesome!

Peter Murphy gave a tasteful rendition of Eric Bogle's 'Green Fields of France'. Still in gentle mode, he finished the 1st half with 'Kelvin Grove'.

Playing electric guitar Zak got the 2nd half underway. He began with the classic 'Stand By Me' and then sang his own song 'Take What You Want'.
9
Back at the Club after nearly two years it was good to see
Kevin again. Playing guitar, he accompanied Pat Yeowart who sang 'Stormy Weather' and then the heartfelt Janis Ian song 'Jessie'.

Alex Okon says he's still nervous when he plays, but tonight's performance of 2 gentle classical guitar pieces showed he needn't worry. As usual, his playing went down well in our appreciative and attentive atmosphere.
