1st December 2005

Another great night at Ashington Folk Club. If you've not been before get yourself along. Great entertainment and all for only £1. It's in the bag!

Be sure to check out the Forward Diary regularly to find out what's happening.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer.

1
Keith Jones started the night off with a  traditional song 'He's Young But He's Daily Growing' and 'The Portuguese'.

Listen

2
Without banjo this evening Tony Hamblin sang two unaccompanied songs which included the sea shanty 'We'll Row The Old Chariot Along' which had lots of us heartily singing the chorus.

3
Mike Jessop was next up with Christmas waistcoat and tie - yes, the tie even plays music! Tonight he sang the fine Alan Hull song 'Winter Song' and then Donovan's 'Universal Soldier'.

Listen

4
Continuing the Christmas theme Jack Hakin t
onight sang 'Pretty Paper' and the Slim Whitman song 'Chime Bells' with some fine yodelling.
5
John Campbell was in 'protest' mood singing an anti Iraq war song and from Donovan's Universal Soldier album 'And The War Drags On'.

Listen

6
He's been a bit poorly so it was especially good to see
Dave Anderson back at the club. He started with a beautiful self-penned number 'Love Is Just As Crazy' and closed the 1st half with the Mike Silver song 'Heaven'.

Becoming a regular and popular feature Pat Yeowart and Kevin began the second half in style with Leonard Cohen's 'Bernadette' and then Crystal Gayle's 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue'.

Listen

8
Ricky Silvester had battled through poor road conditions to share his music with us. He played mandolin while singing 'Lovely Joan' before playing 'O'Carolan's Concerto' on violin.
9
The Les Barker poem 'Daschunds With Erections Can't Climb Stairs' from
Ann Lunam-Cowan raised a few giggles.

Listen

10
Ben Yeowart found a Christmas hat which he wore with great style! With a 3rd Donovan song of the night he sang 'Mellow Yellow' and Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues'.

Listen

Listen

11
In great voice Esther Marshall sang the Richard Thompson song 'Withered And Died' and from Lord of The Rings an Enya song called 'May It Be'. Spellbinding!

Listen

12
Last on was Jim Wigfield. He sang his own composition, 'Sun God' and finished the night with 'Pass The Dutchie On The Left Hand Side' - not quite the Musical Youth version!.
12 acts, 23 songs, tunes and poem - another great night. Get yourself along... for less than the price of a pint you can't go wrong.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

Unaccompanied, guitar, mandolin, violin, spoken word...
Fun, protest, classics, heartrending...
Ashington Folk Club has the lot!
