17th November 2005

We said it last time and it's still true - a great mix of traditional, contemporary, self-penned, acoustic, electric, unaccompanied and poetry - it's all at Ashington Folk Club.

Keep spreading spreading the word - Ashington Folk Club is the place to see and be seen!

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of some of the performers. Due to a technical gremlin some clips are not available... apologies to those fine artists.

1 & 9
Five part harmony group, Beeswing, started the night with Ray Derrick's 'Flying Scot' and followed this with the traditional song 'Only Remembered'. Their song in the second half was a lively rendition of 'Byker Hill'.

Jim Wigfield may have to change some of the words to 'Dilemma' as he announced the government's intention to raise the retirement age to 67! Another new song followed reminding us that as we grow older we'll be 'In Need of Specs'.

Next we had two fine tunes from Alan Bailey as he played Kathryn Tickell's 'Brafferton Village' and 'Roxburgh Castle'.

R
egular performer at Ashington George Rosenthal was tonight  joined by Steve on guitar. They gave us Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon' and the Dylan song 'I Shall Be Released'.
5
It was great to have John Muir and Alex Okon back as a duo. They played 'Cantalina' by Andrew Shields and Ferdinand Carulli's 'Andante in G'. Lovely sound.

6
John Redpath
is a regular performer at Cramlington Folk Club. He began his Ashington stint with some great ragtime, 'Hesitation Blues'. Then, he wowed us with an instrumental called 'Vestapol'.

Finishing the first half were Dave & John who are also regulars at Cramlington. They sang Robin Laing's 'Black Clothes' followed by Maurice' Dickson's 'Wine & Roses' featuring some delicate guitar accompaniment.

Electric guitar man Zak got the second half underway. He began with the classic 'Stand By Me' and then sang the Dire Straits number 'Why Worry'.
10
Ann Lunam-Cowan mostly recites her own which always has us laughing. Tonight, her rendition of 'I Can't find Me Camouflage Net' by Les Barker had the same effect.

Ann Sessoms is a fine exponent of the Northumbrian pipes. She delighted the audience with a Tom Anderson slow air called 'The Silvery Bow' (which describes moonlight on the water) and then played a set of Northumbrian jigs.

John Campbell has been very busy performing with the Ceilidh band 'Real to Reel' so it was good to see him back at the club. In contrast to ceilidh material his spot included 'All Along The Watchtower' by Jimi Hendrix.

Next up were Pat Yeowart & Kevin. This time we were treated to Janis Ian's 'At Seventeen' and the Julie London song 'Cry Me A River'. We hope to hear more like this!
14
Ben Yeowart was in fine form and sang his latest song - 'Laughing In The Corner' (which he dedicated to Ray). He followed this with his ever popular 'Best Friend'.

Closing proceedings was Peter Murphy with two traditional songs. First 'The Ladies Go Dancing At Whitsun' and then 'The Mountains of Mourne'. A smashing end to an enjoyable night.
