21st July 2005
There was a
smashing mix of music and 2 (yes two) people reciting poetry. The diversity and
talent of performers is wonderful - and such a friendly atmosphere and
appreciative listeners too.
We were lucky
to have Peter Murphy as this month's Spotlight - he tells us he may be moving
away in the near future. He will be much missed as a regular at the Club, let's
hope he pops in to play whenever he's back north. He was in
fine form this evening and gave us two great sets - professional, obviously
well prepared (even providing a timed set list for sound engineer and MC). There
was 12-string and 6-string guitar accompaniment and fine voice, very much enjoyed by everyone. Thank you
Peter.
You can Listen
to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

First time in the Bothal Suite for Doug Wood
and he got the evening off to a grand start with, as he called it, a
nonsense song 'Got A Little Home To Go To' and then a half gospel half
secular song called 'Rise When The Rooster Crows'. |
|
|
2
Jack Hakin was in Don Williams
mood tonight and gave us two of his songs. First 'Turn Off The Light
And Love Me Tonight' and then 'She's In Love With A Rodeo Man' - a
song about the rodeo man and the barmaid. |

3
Kevin is on holiday but
Dave Donohoe, especially
for Jack, gave us one of his songs called 'Urban Cowboy'. He then
followed this with a song of his own 'Always You'. |

Spotlight
Spotlight performer Peter Murphy
gave us a great mixture of traditional and contemporary songs. He began
with 'Bogie's Bonny Belle' and then a John Tamms adaptation of 'Over The Hills And Far Away' coupled with
'Peter's Private Army'. He followed on with 'The Ballad Of
Lord Franklin'; Gordon Lightfoot's 'Early Morning Rain'; Peggy Gordon' and finished the first half
with 'Joseph Baker' about a long
distance runner. |
|
5
Alex Okon got the 2nd half off
to a classical start with Bach's Cantata 147 'Jesu Joy Of Man's
Desiring' and followed this with the 'Habanera' from Bizet's opera
Carmen. |
|
|
6
Then it was the turn of Ben Yeowart,
without guitar tonight, who gave us a fine rendition of a Bob Dylan
poem entitled 'Last Thoughts of Woody Guthrie'. |
|
|
|
|

Again
Pat Yeowart
was in fine voice. She sang an American traditional song called
'Red Winged Blackbird' and then another traditional song (with a
warning to women about men!) 'Tiny Sparrow'. |
|

Good to see Ray Derrick again
who sang two of his own songs. First was 'Ship Of Hope' about
the Carpathia, the first ship on the scene after the Titanic sank.
Next was his latest song 'Secret Kingdom' about the Northumbrian
coastline. |

What can we say about
Ann Lunam-Cowan
but well done! Third at the Rothbury Festival this year - her entry
this year was a fun poem 'The Better It Gets' which looks forward to
some of the pleasures of growing old. |
|
|
10
Jim Wigfield
was next up with two of his own songs - 'Landmarks' and then a song
about unrequited love based around the many varieties of specialist
and herbal teas you can
buy! |

Spotlight
And then it was time for the second set by Peter Murphy.
He began with 'Kelvin Grove', and then three Ewan MacColl songs -
'Shoals of Herrin', 'Dirty Old Town' and 'The First Time Ever I Saw
Your Face'. He finished with 'Calico Printer's Clerk' but wait...
there were cries of 'more' and he came back to encore with the
Percy French song 'Mountains of Mourne'. A smashing end to a great
evening. |
