20th October 2005

There was a smashing crowd tonight as the Spotlight shone on Jimmy & Carol. A great night's entertainment encompassing traditional tunes, classical, bluegrass, country, old American and contemporary songwriting too. Wow!

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

Full piece performed by Jimmy & Carol
1
The night was kicked off by Ray Derrick who sang two of his own compositions. First  'Leaving Harbour' and then his new (end of night) song called (we think) 'Goodnight'.

2
Alan Bailey, Northumbrian piper  was next. In great form he played 'Rowntree Hill' and 'Newcastle Station'.

With great zeal and dexterity on the banjo Tony Hamblin played a very rousing version of 'Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms'.

Listen

4
 Next
was Jack Hakin who quietened things down as he yodelled and whistled with the song 'Dreamy Montana Moon'.
5 Spotlight
Jimmy & Carol set off at a cracking pace with 'My Dixie Darling'. They kept up the momentum with 'Pinewood Hills' and 'Greenback Dollar'. Next was 'Palomino Pony' (with sound effects as Jimmy's harmonicas fell one by one to the floor!). They followed this with 'Last Letter Home', stepping up the tempo again to finish with 'Bowling Green'.

Listen

6
Alex Okon began the second half with Jan on keyboards. Then he was joined by first time visitor John for a classical guitar duet... (Whatever next?).

Northumbrian pipe time as Ann Sessoms gave us 2 fine tunesets. First, in romantic mood, we had 'Fond Heart' and 'Joys of Wedlock' followed by 16th and 17th century English dance tunes.

Listen

8
 Dave Donohoe
was next up and treated us to more classical guitar as he sang the Christine McVie's lovely 'Songbird'.
10 Spotlight
Stepping into the spotlight again, Jimmy & Carol began with 'Katie Daley'. Then came 'Indian Man', a non politically correct song about how the American Indians have been treated. They launched into 'Lord I Hope This Day is Good' and continued in religious vein with Steve Earle's 'Pilgrim'. Next, from the singing of Bessie Smith' we had 'Careless Love'. They brought their set to a close with 'Blue Ridge Mountain Blues' and 'Cotton Eye Joe'. Amid whistles and shouts for more, they encored with 'Old Flames'.
