15th December 2005
The talent of
performers at Ashington Folk Club is great. Tonight there was banjo, guitar,
Northumbrian pipes, poetry, traditional song, contemporary song, unaccompanied
song and classical instrumentals too - 3 of them!
The
Northerners formed
in the late 60s, last playing together about 10 years ago and, in a one-off
reunion Ray Derrick, Eric Laverick and Michael Charlton gave
us a rousing and enjoyable end to another great year at the club. With
their
mix of traditional and contemporary chorus songs everyone was joining in and
having a great time.
Thanks lads!
You can Listen
to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

Spotlight
Spotlight performers The Northerners
began in rousing form with 'Belle of Belfast City' and
'Heave Away Santy Anno'. Next was one of Ray's own songs which is
about, and is called, 'The Northerners'. They continued with Dominic Behan's 'Liverpool Lou', 'Dundee Cat'
(traditional), Paul Simon's 'The
Boxer' and finished the first set with John Denver's 'Country Roads'.
With shouts for 'More!' they took a well deserved rest. |
|
5
The second half was started by Northumbrian Piper Alan Bailey who
played 'Rowantree Hill' and 'The Oyster Girl'. |
|
|
6
Then it was the turn of Peter Murphy,
who sang the Ewan MacColl song 'The First Time Ever I Saw Her
Face' followed with a humorous medley of Lancashire songs and
nursery rhymes - complete with translation.. |
|
|
|
|
7
Jim Wigfield
had 2 new songs (and 2 new
chords) this evening.
Appropriately for the season, 'Christmas Time' and 'Weginald's Westauwant'. |
|
|
|
8
Also in a festive mood, Ann Lunan-Cowan
this evening raised a few giggles with a humorous take on
'The Twelve Days Of Christmas'. |
|
9
An instrumental piece next from
Vince Carr was Dvorak's New World symphony 'Going
Home' - mmm... you could almost smell the bread! |
|
|
10
Then it was the turn of Kevin,
he gave a great rendition of the 'Romanza' especially requested
by Alex. |

Spotlight
With glasses recharged, The Northerners
returned for their 2nd set. They sang 'The Gypsy Rover', Tom Paxton's 'Last Thing On My
Mind', 'Bound For South Australia', 'Old Maid In The Garrett', 'Home
Boys Home' - finishing with 'Cushy Butterfield' as performed on
Opportunity Knocks in May 1971! Amid great applause and shouts for
more they encored with 'Pleasant & Delightful'. |
