16th June 2005

What a warm and busy night it was. Again there were lots of performers - so much so that we had to limit the 2nd half to one song each. We'd love to give everyone more, but there's only so much that can be crammed into 21/2 hours... shorter songs? shorter introductions? less performers? What do you think?

We were back in the Bothal Suite (more on that in the Newsletter), and the Spotlight was on George Rosenthal. We all had a great time, and there were cries for 'more' at the end of the evening - despite running over time we did manage to get George to sing another!

1
jiva
began the evening with '4+20' followed by 'Back Again'. Thanks go to Dave Page for his valiant effort with the sound system!
2
And back again was Keith who sang 'Joseph' written about a friend who had committed suicide. He then lightened things with 'The Chastity Belt'.
3
Old English
had us singing choruses of of 2 traditional songs, 'The Bonny Ship The Diamond' and 'Down In The Coal Mine'.
4 Spotlight
Spotlight performer
George Rosenthal began his first spot with a John Prine song 'Hello In There' followed by 'Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nilsson. Next was Paul Simon's 'America' and 'What's The Use Of Wings'  - a beautiful Brian Bedford song. He then treated us to 'It Ain't Over Till The Fat Man Sings' and 'Rothbury Chardonnay Queen'. He ended with a thought provoking song,  'The Lock Keeper'.
5
Kevin Robinson got the 2nd half underway, accompanied by John Campbell on guitar with the Bob Dylan classic 'Knockin On Heaven's Door'.
6
Then John Campbell had his own turn and sang his mangled humorous take on a  Chris Rea song which he re-named 'Cambois Beach'.
7
Good to see Dave and John back at the Club who gave a gentle rendition of an old favourite, 'Love Hurts'.
8
Next was Jack Hakin with another firm favourite, the Don Williams song 'Tulsa Time
'.
No yodelling this time - but maybe July?
9
What can we say about Ann Lunam-Cowan? Her poems are always fun, but tonight she gave us a smashing Les Barker story based on place names in and around London.
Very very funny - laughter all round.
10
With his usual insight into life, Jim Wigfield sang his song about personal hygiene entitled 'Granny Always Washed Between Her Toes'.
11
Tony Hamblin regaled us with different possibilities for the traditional song, 'Sir Patrick Spence' - eventually singing what turned out to be a relatively short version!
12
Then it was the turn of Ben Yeowart who gave us a 12-bar version of 'Leopardskin Pillbox Hat', sneakily managing to segue it with 'Stone You'.
13
Well-crafted arrangements are the trademark of Dave Anderson. Tonight's treat was the self-penned 'Take A Little Time'... smashing.
14
Next up we had another gentle guitarist Dave Donohoe with
'Songbird', a beautiful Christine McVie song.
15 Spotlight
By now it was quite late (and very warm - more like a sauna than a folk club!). But
George Rosenthal gave us a cracking 2nd half with 'If You Could Read My Mind', 'The Old Simplicity', 'Walking In Memphis', 'May You Never' and King Of The Road'. He encored with Kieran Halpin's 'Nothing To Show For It All'... another great spotlight.

Next Spotlight
21st July sees Peter Murphy in the spotlight. Peter is a fine singer and accomplished guitarist with a good repertoire of mainly traditional songs.

We look forward to seeing you there...

A spotlight act, 13 floor spots, 28 songs and a story! Such a lot of entertainment in a single evening... and only £1 (remember: 'It's In The Bag'). Ashington Folk Club continues to give regular visitors the opportunity to showcase their talent in a warm (!), friendly and appreciative environment.
