18th August 2005

Another scorcher. If the weather keeps on this way we'll soon have to rename the Spotlight night to Hotspot!

In the Spotlight tonight was classical guitarist Alex Okon whose performance was very well received - a night to remember.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

Full piece performed by Alex Okon

Old English got the audience singing as they started the night off with 'Some Tyrant' and 'Sorry The Day I Was Married'.

As our MC put it, "a brace of pipers" was next. Ann Sessoms and Alan Bailey enchanted us with the Kathryn Tickell air, 'BrafftertonVillage', followed by 'Whittingham Green Lane' and the 'New York Hornpipe'.

Ann Lunam-Cowan then recited her 'gooey' poem 'The Dog That Laid The Golden Egg' - all to do with something the dog ate and then discarded!

And then Alex. He played a variety of classical pieces ranging from Latin American to 'Andante Graciosi' by Ferdinand Correli, 'La Paloma', and 'La Grima'. He finished his first set of the night with a 'Habanera'
5
Getting the second half underway we had the Snow family - on holiday from Devon. First it was father and son Paul and Stephen with the Hank Williams song 'I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You' followed by a strathspey and reel.

6
Then it was Stephen's turn for a solo violin piece. He played Bruce MacGregor's '101 Reasons To Do Nothing'. Fine playing from someone so young.

Next it was the turn of Mum, Jane Snow, who gave us an unaccompanied rendition of 'The Bay Of Biscay'.

Listen

9
George Rosenthal began his set with the Nanci Griffith song 'Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness' and followed this with Simon & Garfunkel's 'America'.
9
Then time for Pat Yeowart with the McGarrigle's song 'Sing One For Sister' which she followed with Leonard Cohen's 'Bernadette'.

Listen

10
Tony Hamblin started with an unaccompanied song about foxhunting possibly called 'Tallyho' and then with his banjo he did a song about a railway loco fireman.

In fine voice Michael Docherty sang Van Morrison's 'She Gives Me Religion' and followed this with a smooth rendition the classic 'A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square'.

Listen

12
Peter Murphy started with a request, 'The Bells of Rhymney' which is based on a poem by Idris Owen. In gentler mood he then sang 'The Mountains Of Mourne'.
13
Then we heard some harrowing lyrics from John Campbell as he sang the Lewis Allen and Sonny White song
'Strange Fruit' followed by Neil Young's 'Southern Man'. Heavy and thought-provoking.

Alex returned for his second, starting with J.S. Bach's Cantata 147 - 'Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring'. He then played the 'Habanera' from Bizet's opera Carmen, the 2nd movement ('The Largo') of Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major and then 'Variation On A Theme'. There were whistles and shouts of 'More! More!' - so he obliged by encoring with with the 'Romanza'.

1 spotlight act, 12 floor spots, 32 songs, medleys, tunes and a poem - wow! Yet another late night... we'll be getting into trouble if we keep this up.

Phew! What a night - another spotlight hotspot.

Thanks to everyone, and especially Alex for a great night.
