3rd March 2005

Another great night.

The Folk Bar was full - standing room only. So, if you want a good seat and/or you want to be sure of a floor spot, then it pays to be early.

1
Fresh from his super Spotlight
John Campbell started the night in fine form  with  Dave Crosby's 'Almost Cut My Hair' followed by a protest song based on  'And The War Drags On' by Mick Softly. Great stuff.

2
Always good to see Alan Bailey who was up next with a couple of smashing tunes on his Northumbrian pipes - 'Brafferton Village' and 'The Willow Tree Hornpipe'.
3
Ellen Morgan paid us a return visit singing 'Another Suitcase In Another Hall' from Evita and then the Drifters hit 'Under The Boardwalk' had us all joining in!
4
Diane Green is losing her early nervousness as evidenced by delightful unaccompanied versions of 'Long Black Veil' and 'The Recruited Collier'. Smashing!
5
Alex delighted the audience with his fine playing of 'Jesu' Joy Of Mans Desiring' followed by Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major. He had hoped to bring Jan with him but she was working!
6
We always enjoy Ben Yeowart and tonight was no exception. He began by saying he would do two songs that he had tried to write. 'Praise Be' and 'Come To Me' were brand new, in fact one had only been written that afternoon.
7
We were given two fine night visiting songs by
Tony Hamblin - something to do with string and pulling it we believe!
8
Announcing "It's  a little bit late for St. David's Day", Ann Sessoms finished off the first half with a fine rendition of 2 Welsh tunes and 3 jigs.
9
Nice to have Kevin Robinson at the club again and this time we managed to get a picture. He started off the second half with the Dylan classic 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' followed by 'Open Freeway/Easy Living' (his own composition we think).
10
Next up were
Rob and Lynn showing their usual instrumental dexterity. Their 'Dashing White Sergeant Set' almost had us dancing!
11
Dave Donohoe was up next and after starting with 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue', he then did a short instrumental of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' - Wow! He finished with 'Claire to Here'.
12
Our resident poet  Ann Lunam-Cowan was in fine form with her poem 'I'm At An Awkward Age Me' which came second at Rothbury Festival last year! Spot on!.
13
And then we had Pete Murphy with great versions of
'Mr Bo Jangles' followed by 'Bonnie Lassie-Oh'. Nice.
14
As usual, Pat Yeowart was in great voice. This time we were treated to 'Buddy Can You Spare Me A Dime' and then 'Cry Me A River'.
15
Dave Anderson writes some fine songs and tonight he gave us 'The Sound of Goodbye' and 'Our Song' (a request from jiva). Lovely stuff.
16
As the night drew to a close Old English gave us a sneak preview of what to expect on their Spotlight night of 17th March - 'Sauve' and 'Bell Ringing Song'. Smashing!
16 acts, 32 songs, tune sets and poems - all crammed into a single evening's entertainment. It just gets better and better. Come along and see what you've been missing - good live music in a warm and friendly environment.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

Thanks again to everyone who was there
Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
