1
jiva
starting the proceedings is becoming a regular feature.
Tonight they began the evening with their own 'Dream On' followed by
'Jimmy's Song' by Allan Taylor. |
|
|
|
2
Great
to see
Doug Wood
again who gave us 'Down In Alabama' and a bluegrass
version of 'Shady Grove'. |
|
3
Another welcome back is
Ray Derrick
who hasn't been to the club for a few weeks. He sang 'John O' Dreams'
and then 'Leaving Harbour', his winning song from this year's Morpeth
Gathering competition. |
|
|
4
Newcomer to the Club
Keith Jones
started his turn with a Hamish Imlach song and then
had us all giggling with a great rendition of Jake Thackray's
'The Hole'. Wow! Nice bow tie! |
|
|
|
|
5
Vince was next up telling us he's not so much a melancholy
man, but more miserable. He sang his favourite Moody Blues song,
'Melancholy Man'. He then played an accomplished instrumental version
of Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides Now'. |
|
|
|
6
Then we had
Kevin
Robinson with a classic Bob Dylan song, 'Knockin'
on Heaven's Door'. Without further ado he launched into 'To Love
Somebody' by the Bee Gees. He certainly has a varied repertoire! |
|
7
Jack
Hakin
sang the Slim Whitman song 'I'm A Fool' and followed this - especially
for Val - with 'The Old Rocking Chair' with lots of his trademark
yodelling... how does he do it? |
|
|
8
Finishing the first half
was
Peter Murphy
with a J Marhsall song, 'The Ladies Go Dancing At Whitsun' and then a
song with an 'A' level chorus (it was in Welsh!) called 'Fhira
Bhhea' ['The Boatman']. Thanks for the spelling lesson. |
|
|
|
|
9
Starting
the second half off in great style was
Pat Yeowart with Eric Andersen's 'Thirsty Boots' and
the evergreen Sandy Denny song, 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'. |
|
|
|
10
Ben Yeowart had
planned to sing 'Shady Grove' but, as Doug had sung it earlier, Ben
gave us the first verse of his arrangement. He followed this with a
request for Ray, his own song 'My Best Friend'. |
|
11
In reflective mood Jim Wigfield
sang 'My Northumberland' and followed this with 'Dad', a song he had
written especially for his father. |
|
|
12
Two unaccompanied songs from Diane
Green
- first was
Jez Lowe's 'The Last Of The Widows' which she followed with a
traditional number (sorry - we didn't catch the title). |
|
|
|
|
13
& 14
Neil with old guitar but new pickup (sounding
good) sang his own song 'I Know How It Feels' and was then joined by
newcomer Sally on Flute for another self-penned, 'Now It Is Over' |
|
|
|
14
& 15
Sally borrowed Neil's guitar and
sang a song called 'Hellulujah' - she told us she was nervous, but it
didn't show. Well done! |
|
16
Our final newcomer of the night was Joanne
singing a capella, with a fine and confident rendition of the
Tracy Chapman song 'Behind The Wall'. She finished with Julie Miller's
'Broken Things'. |
|
|
17
Next
up was
Dave Anderson
with the beautiful Brian Bedford song
'What's The Use Of Wings'. He then borrowed Jimmy's new guitar <gulp!>
for 'It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go' by Nanci Griffith. |
|
|
|
|
18
Last up, but by no means least, was
John Campbell with two David Crosby songs 'Almost
Cut My Hair' and 'Long Long Time'. There were cries for more but by
now it was already way past 11:00, so we had to stop! |
|
|
|
Our MC
Val
with her new Taylor guitar earrings - had to show them off!
|
|
|
New feature -
'Were You There?'
If you'd like to add a few words
about the night, scroll to the bottom of the page and add your comments.
We won't publish your name unless you specifically ask us to. |
| So... the
numbers? 18 acts,
33 songs and tunes. Phew! It's a credit to our wonderful MC that she manages
to squeeze so much music into a single night - and it's a credit to
performers and audience for making it so enjoyable.
Why not come along and join us? You'll find a
friendly atmosphere, attentive audience, and great performances at Ashington
Folk Club... first and third Thursday of every month. |
|
Thanks
again to everyone.
Another smashing evening... |
