3rd February 2005

What a great start to 2005!

The Folk Bar was packed out - standing room only, very little space left for storing instruments and cases. So, if you want a good seat and/or you want to be sure of a floor spot, then it pays to be early.

1
New year - new start. In a break with tradition, jiva started the night. Special thanks to Dave Donohoe for manning the PA while they sang 'Back Again' and 'Bread And Fishes'.

Unfortunately, no-one thought to take a photo of jiva - but, you can find some on the jiva website.

2
Next up was club regular, Alan Bailey with a couple of great tunes on his Northumbrian pipes. Thanks Alan, we're all looking forward to more in 2005.
3
Tony Hamblin got us all singing with 'Shady Grove' and 'My Boy Billy' where he alternately sang the male and female parts.
4
In their own, inimitable style Jane's Alley (now a threesome) sang the self-penned 'The Blues Of One Eyed Joe' and 'One Way Boy' by William Moore.
5
Diane Green doesn't sing for us on every visit, so we were really pleased to have her perform 'Rose Of Allendale' and the equally moving 'Someone Waits For Me.'
6
We always enjoy
Alex, classical guitarist, but tonight was extra special with Jan adding extra depth and emotion on keyboards.
7
Starting the second half in style we had
Peter Murphy with 'Over The Hills And Far Away' followed by 'Peter's Private Army'.
8
Rob and Lyn entertained us with some instrumental dexterity combining mandocello and Northumbrian pipes in 2 fine tunesets.
9
Next was resident
Pat Yeowart with her super a capella versions of two popular classics 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue' and 'Jessie.'
10
John Campbell was in fine form - he'll be our featured spotlight artist on 17th February. Don't miss the chance to see more of our very own blues supremo... you won't regret it.
11
Combine good humour with Country and Western and throw in some yodelling too - and what do you get?
Jack Hakin, that's what, and we love it. More please, Jack.
12
It's been a few years since Ellen was at Ashington. 'Woodstock' and Bob Dylan's 'Sarah' showed what we've been missing... don't leave it so long next time, OK?

By now it was getting late, and we had to limit the last 4 performers to 1 number each...

Sorry chaps - we'll try and do better next time.

13

Dave Donohoe gave us a smashing rendition of 'Where The Wind Blows' - a firm favourite of ours. Alas the clock prevented us from having more... but hopefully we'll hear more next time.
14
Sporting a new guitar,
Jim Wigfield sang 'Tsunami', a thought provoking song he'd written about the recent disaster.
15
George Rosenthal always goes down well. Tonight he treated us to Kieran Halpin's 'Nothing To Show For It All'.
16
'Time for some nonsense' quipped
Ben Yeowart as he launched into a song featuring clothes, and washing, and hanging on the line, and all manner of things. An excellent end to a great opening night for 2005!
16 acts, 27 songs and tune sets. 2005 is now off to a good start and promises to continue the improvements we saw in 2004 - more performers, more audience, more entertainment and friendliness all round... You can be sure of a warm welcome, some great music and the chance of a good old chinwag at Ashington Folk Club.

Don't forget...

1. Singers, Musicians & Poets on the 1st Thursday of every month, and more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

2. Our second online survey is waiting for your input.

Thanks to audience and performers
for getting 2005 up and running.
See you again soon...
