'And it's no nay never,
No nay never no more...'

It's amazing how one thing leads to another - new instruments can spark new ideas (perhaps a departure from the usual, comfortable subject matter or style) and new songs may come out of these ideas. Some things are just plain good old fashioned fun... it's good to be able to laugh and not take ourselves too seriously on occasion - and that's how this song was born.

See Maurice Baker's book 'The Singer-Songwriter's Last Stand' pages 269 and 270 where he writes about the jiva 5Rs songwriting checklist... this song definitely falls into the R6 category.

Jimmy and Val

I've played 'The Wild Rover' for too many years
And I've spent all me money on guitars and gear
And now I'm rehearsing with new songs in store
And I never will play 'The Wild Rover' no more

And it's no nay never
No nay never no more
Will I play 'The Wild Rover'
No never no more

I went into an alehouse I used to frequent
And I told the landlady how my time had been spent
I asked for a gig, she answered me 'Nay'
Said 'It's posers like you I can get any day'

And it's no nay never
No nay never no more
Will I play 'The Wild Rover'
No never no more

So I pulled out the words to 'The Fields Of Athenry'
And I told the committee I'd give it a try
They said that this song was one of the best
And what they said before was only in jest

And it's no nay never
No nay never no more
Will I play 'The Wild Rover'
No never no more

'll go back to that folk club, and confess what I've done
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son
If they don't forgive me 'cos they've not done before
I'll sing 'Folkie Lament' and they'll show me the door

'Cos it's no nay never
No nay never no more
Will I play 'The Wild Rover'
No never no more

And it's no nay never
No nay never no more
Will I play 'The Wild Rover'
No never no more

Will I play 'The Wild Rover'
No never... no...

More! More! More!
