2nd March 2006

After 45 minutes of the usual furniture shifting and connecting together the PA equipment, our sound check revealed NO SOUND from the main speakers! After checking connections, swapping around cables, switching everything off and on again... still nothing... it had worked perfectly last time (16th February with Gypsy Feelya).

But not to worry, our recent investment in a monitor for the club saved the day - we just turned the monitor round to the audience and used that as the main speaker for the evening!

And what a great night we had. Another good mix of traditional, contemporary, self-penned, acoustic, electric, unaccompanied  - it's all at Ashington Folk Club.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer.

1
Old English got the evening off to a great traditional feel with  'Queen Of Hearts' and 'Some Tyrant'.

Listen

2
With a borrowed acoustic guitar Zak sang his lovely self-penned song 'Take What You Want'. We loved the sound of his acoustic guitar playing so much that he's off to buy one of his own!

First time at the club for
Barry Fitzpatrick.  He sang 'New Day Will Dawn' which he had written for his daughter and then a humorous song 'First Anniversary - Happy Divorce' which raised a few giggles. We hope to see Barry again.

Listen

4
Another first timer at Ashington (at least since jiva took the reins) was Peter Shaw. He sang the Boo Hewardine song 'Bell Book & Candle' and Richard Thompson's 'Vincent Black Lightning'. We hope to see Peter back again as well.
5
Next up was Ellen sporting a bright red heart-shaped electric guitar! But she swapped to acoustic guitar (courtesy of Mike Jessop) for her own 'Denim Eyes And Dancing Fingers' followed by 'Dark As A Dungeon', a Merle Travis song.

Listen

6
With guitar, harmonica, double bass and harmony vocals
Jimmy & Carol  sang Steve Earle's 'The Mountain'. They followed with the Valerie Smith song 'Where The Bluebells Grow'.

Finishing the first half was Mike Jessop with Alan Hull's 'Breakfast' and then a George Welch song 'The Biggest Lass In Byker' (almost with bad language - but not quite).

Listen

8
Getting the second half underway was Peter Murphy
with Jock O' Hazeldene (an old Scottish song that was adapted by Walter Scott). Next he did another Scottish song, this time of unrequited love, with an un-spellable Gaelic title but which we know as 'Fare Thee Well Love'.
9
Pat and Kevin tonight treated us to Carole King's gospel-sounding 'Way Over Yonder' and the Dylan classic, 'It Ain't Me Babe'.

Listen

10
Following on was son, Ben Yeowart, who sang the traditional (!) song 'Shady Grove'. But then he reverted to more familiar territory with Bob Dylan's off-the-wall 'Million Dollar Bash'.

11
Tony Hamblin sang two traditional seafaring songs. First was an unaccompanied version of 'Three Score And Ten' and then with banjo 'Go To Sea Once More'.

Listen

12
Next up was Dave Anderson - with his new Taylor koa guitar sounding crystal clear he encouraged us to join in with 'Rescue Me'. Then he gave a heartfelt performance of his self-penned 'Northumberland'.
13
John Campbell was in fine form with Neil Young's 'When You Dance' - which he had planned to do at our previous dance-themed night. Next it was Swingin' Blue Jeans meet Jim Morrison as he segued 'You're No Good' with 'Riders On The Storm'.

Listen

14
Then it was Jim Wigfield. What can we say except the whole room was loving it as they laughed and joined in with their caterwauling (and dog barking) sound effects' for his new song 'Cat Fight'.

It was past closing time by now, and George Rosenthal finished the evening for us. First he sang 'Anger In Your Soul', and last an unaccompanied song about a dog called 'Aloysius'.

Later...

jiva took the PA equipment home and tested it - yep, the speakers are definitely past their best. New ones are on order and should have their debut on 16th March when Vince Carr is in the spotlight.

So, a great night was had by all. There were 15 acts, 28 songs and tunes. Do yourself a favour  -  get along to the club. For less than the price of a pint you get great entertainment.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

Equipment gremlins can't defeat us...
Thanks to everyone for another great night.
