16 February 2006

It was with great sadness that we learned, earlier in the week, of the death of one of our regular performers - Esther Marshall - who passed away on 7th February. It has often been said that 'she has the voice of an angel'. Esther will be sorely missed by all.

The planned theme for the night was 'dance' and, although the evening began in a subdued atmosphere, we were treated to a fine performance of oriental and tribal dancing  by Gypsy Feelya one of whom is our very own resident poet Ann Lunam-Cowan.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite from each floor spot.

After imparting the sad news about Esther it seemed only right that jiva should begin the evening. They sang the Eagles classic 'Peaceful Easy Feeling' and then their own composition 'Different Dreams'.

Alan Bailey
, Northumbrian piper  was next. In fine form he played 'Brafferton Village'.

With great feeling Zak sang the Dylan classic 'Blowing In The Wind' and his own composition 'Things Will Never Be The Same'.

 Next
was Jim Wigfield who sang two of his own songs. First 'Fruity Herbal Teas' which he followed with a new song, encompassing the theme of the night, 'Dancing In The Night'.

5 & 6 Gypsy Feelya

To close the first half - with swaying bodies and shimmering sounds of the jewellery on their costumes - Gypsy Feelya showed us their skill at bellydancing.

After a short break for the raffle, and to allow time for the girls to change their costumes, Gypsy Feelya returned for their second spot of the evening. The dancing for this part was of a more tribal nature.

The dancers enjoyed themselves, the audience enjoyed the dancers, and it was great fun!

How do you follow that? Who better than Pat Yeowart and Kevin who gave us a fine version of 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' which had the whole room joining in.

7
 Ann Sessoms
was next up and she treated us to two sets of tunes on the Northumbrian Pipes including 'Waters Of Holland', 'Argeers' and 'All In The Garden Is Green'.
8
Returning to the theme of dance we had George Rosenthal who sang 'Save The Last Dance for Me' and 'Moondance'. That's two dances for the price of one!

Listen

9
Tony Hamblin
had planned to sing 'Save The Last Dance For Me' with Banjo, but sang a rousing 'New York Girls' (he said it had the same chords).
