5th February 2004

A cracking good start to 2004. Our first Singers, Musicians & Poets night saw an increase in the audience and the number of performers. Every table had two copies of the January newsletter, some A5 size leaflets – not forgetting the all-important pen to fill in the survey.

By 20:30 the Folk Bar, while not overflowing, was filling up nicely. So without further ado, we got the night underway.

Ann Lunam-Cowan
1
Following the ‘Hello and welcome’ announcement Ann Lunam-Cowan gave us her excellent ‘Ode To Jimmy And Val’ – a fun poem about Ashington’s newest resident duo and MCs.

Ray Derrick
2 & 13
Ray Derrick impressed us with self-penned songs and his guitar and banjo playing skills.

First time visitor, Alex, confessed to being very nervous. He need not have worried. We all enjoyed him playing some beautiful classical guitar pieces.

Ann Sessoms is a well established and respected piper. She treated us to three  delightful sets of tunes on her Northumbrian pipes.

Dave Donohoe
5 & 11
Dave Donohoe played guitar and sang his own brand of quiet contemporary songs. In the second half he played a lovely instrumental of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'.

6 & 14
jiva closed the first half with their usual gentle blend of guitars and vocal harmony. They also finished the night with ‘Dark As A Dungeon’ and ‘Don’t Think Twice’.

7 & 12
After a short raffle break, club resident John ‘Doc’ Campbell did some great blues, with some wry football related humour in his second slot.

Jack (probably our oldest resident) entertained us to Country music with some fine yodelling.

Ben
9
Ben, another club regular, sang two Bob Dylan songs in his own inimitable style of almost whispering while rhythmically hitting his guitar.
Pat Yeowart
10
Last of the residents was Pat Yeowart whose unaccompanied renditions of classic songs always go down well.
Special thanks to Dave Cooper for providing great sound from the PA. So, there you have it - 10 acts, 14 slots, 29 songs, tunes, poems. All for free!

Thanks to one and all for a smashing opening night for 2004.
