The 2004 season got off to a great start on Thursday 5th February. Our resident poet, Ann Lunam-Cowan, kicked off proceedings with this fun poem about Ashington’s newest resident duo and MCs.

Ode to Jimmy and Val

Well tonight's the first club night of 2004
A New Year and a new start
And it's not going to be like it was before
We've new people to give us new heart

Now here's Jimmy and Val, who we first met last year
They turned up and took us by storm
They got a great welcome from the people here
We're a friendly Club, easy and warm

We suited them, and they suited us
With their chatting and singing and playing
They merged right in, without any fuss
And now it looks like they're staying

We've had some great nights with our new-found friends
They've treated us to old and new songs
Here's hoping it'll pay great dividends
And put the Club up where it belongs

Hard working and keen, they're hosting tonight
So here's to Jimmy and Valerie
They've even updated the Club Website -
Did we mention there isn't a salary?

We're moist with anticipation here at Ash-
ington Folk Club, we're in a fever
We're looking for flair, and a bit of panache
So eyes down for a full house, with jiva

Give a rousing Ashington Folk Club hello
Two our two new friends and performers
So raise your drinks, take a good swallow
And let's make their first night a real stormer
