Review A friendly place - best of order, and an appreciative audience. Hosted by jiva 2004 to 2007! We liked it so much we bought the domain name...  From January 2008 the team is Pat, Doug and Ben Yeowart with Tristan Sturgeon.

Mostly Local Singers, Musicians and Poets nights, with the occasional extended spot - all abilities and all genres are welcome. There's a PA (optional) if you want to fill out your sound slightly. Performers generally start with 2 songs, then more later depending on time available.

Occasional special guest nights as advertised.

No smoking (since August 2004).

Great archive website (by jiva Design, naturally) - photo review galleries, soundbites, forward diary, newsletter, performer details, club history... the lot.

Review Separate room with a through bar.

This club has been gong since the 1960s, and everyone seems to know everyone else! Generally 2 songs each to start - if it gets crowded later on, latecomers may only get 1 song.

A good mix of residents including traditional, contemporary, unaccompanied, country, poetry - in fact, anything goes.

Review Alternates between singarounds and concert style guest nights. Separate upstairs room. On singaround nights buy your drinks downstairs.

Good crop of local/resident singers providing a good cross-section of musical styles, friendly and attentive organisers and audience.

Review Separate room upstairs, but get your drinks from the bar downstairs. Resident band's amplification available to performers if needed.

Club format is... opening set by the resident band, then 2 or 3 each by other singers and musicians until approximately 10:30, then another set by the resident band (possibly with others joining in occasionally session-style).

Wide variety of regular performers, different genres, styles and abilities... a good mix.

Review January 2004 to November 2004 - run by West Sleekburn Farm Community Music Association.

Separate room with through bar. Plug in, high ceiling, good acoustics... very promising venue with possibilities but, alas, it didn't work out.

Review Open plan pub with raised stage/gallery area for performers.

The pub has lots of live music - rock bands, etc. The Thursday night buskers is a bit more laid back with everyone getting 3 or 4 songs. As with any buskers night, there's plenty of noise/talking from the pub regulars/customers at the bar and playing pool - but at least the PA isn't cranked up to max volume to compensate.

A friendly bunch of people who just want to play some music... a mix of young and old, blues, pop, classic hits, R&B, folk, singer/songwriter, etc. One of the better buskers we've played.

Review Separate room upstairs - buy your drinks in the bar downstairs.

Open mic policy, but away from the public bar so there's less background noise.

Start off with 2 or 3 songs each, then more after the break if time allows.

No smoking since August 2006.

Review Relaxed informal kind of singaround with multi MC-ing. Separate room with easy access to the bar for drinks.

Frequent guest nights - advisable to pre-book floor spots on those nights.

Singarounds start with a few from the resident scratch band/troupe, then two each for floor spots. In the second half there's more from the resident 'band', then generally one more each if there is still time.

Friendly and attentive audience.

Review Firmly established as one of Northumberland's most popular live music venues, Rothbury Roots presents folk, blues, country, jazz and contemporary singer-songwriters in a friendly, intimate setting.

Paid headline guests each month, with support slots booked in advance - so no opportunity for casually dropping in to do a floor spot.

Separate room for the music - so get your drinks at the bar before the show or during breaks.

Review Has its own area separated from the bar by the pool room. Friendly welcoming atmosphere and a good crowd of local singers. They advertise as mostly traditional (as evidenced by their monthly guest bookings), but we found a varied mix of unaccompanied modern and traditional songs as well as guitar, recorder and bowed psaltery.

Residents nights are singarounds with lots of performers. The pub landlord provides a buffet at half time - yummy!

No smoking.

This review was for the Half Moon, Ryton. The club has since moved to the Black Bull at Blaydon.

Review Separate room with corner stage - buy your drinks in the main bar. PA provided but not obligatory.

All genres of music encouraged to come and play. Informal atmosphere and a wide variety of performers - although not a folk club, and not quite a buskers night, the emphasis of the night is enjoyment of the music.

Two to three songs each act to start with, then more later, then still more until late.

Review Mostly professional guest nights with some 'double header' nights and residents nights... all very well explained on their website.

The folk club is held in a separate room, so you'll need to go to the bar in the main room for drinks. Good bunch of residents/regulars - accomplished performers of a wide variety of genres. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Review Thursday: The Keepers Inn

The club is in a separate area off from the main bar, although the open plan format of the pub means that noise does stray into the folk club.

The format is a singaround - everyone getting one turn (two for duos etc), and around and around again until time runs out.

Friendly organiser and a good selection of regulars too.
