6th December 2007

Another grand night - high spirits all round, everyone winding up towards Christmas.

And a special thank you to Tristan who passed his soundman apprenticeship at the first attempt. The PA is hereby handed over to you...

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1 & 12
Geoff Pickard
began the evening with 'Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness' by John Prine and then the Tim Hardin song 'Reason To Believe'. He came back at the end for two more and sang 'Peach Pickin' Time in Georgia' and then Tom Paxton's 'Last Thing On My Mind'. But there were shouts for "more"  and he finished off the night with his favourite Paxton song 'Troubador'.

Next up was Ellen Morgan who sang, unaccompanied, the lovely Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby song 'Goodbye Old Friend' and then, with guitar, she sang Jim Croce's 'Photographs & Memories'.

Jack Hakin
sang two Marty Robbins songs. First was 'Till The Next Teardrops Fall' which he followed with 'Return To Me' - he even did a walkabout the Folk Bar, serenading each of our ladies in turn!

Robin Lewsey and Diane
Green, two club regulars, performed together for the first time tonight. They started with the traditional song 'The Butcher Boy' which they followed with Gillian Welch's 'A Little Song'. Great stuff - more please.
5
Getting in the spirit of  Christmas
Jim Slaughter played 'O Holy Night' which he followed with 'The Cuckoo Waltz'.

6
Finishing up the first half we had a recitation of a Thomas Hood poem 'November' from Jim Wigfield. Then a new self-penned number, first song he's written in blues style, called 'November Blues'.

Peter Meek got the second half underway with the Woody Guthrie song 'Do-Re-Mi' which he followed with Steve Earle's 'I Can't Remember If We Said Goodbye'.

Listen

8
Becoming quite a regular feature together, Ben and Pat Yeowart
were next with 'Sinner Man' and then a new song (for them), 'Cornbread'.
9
Bringing a festive cheer to the room was Mike Jessop who was attired in Santa style clothes. He sang the Alan Hull classic 'Lady Eleanor' and then 'Santa Clause Is Coming To Town'.

Listen

10
Two poems next from  Ann Lunam-Cowan. First her own composition, 'My Mother Said', and then Les Barker's 'My Snails Have Not Yet Arrived'.

We had
another story about Geordie from Derek Greenacre as he told us about 'The Bag Of Chips' and then he played a delicate (but still bluesy) instrumental piece.

Mr Blackie Bear
(really he is black - he just looks purple) was keeping a careful watch over everything going on this evening and by all accounts he had a great time. As we all did!

11 acts, 25 songs and tunes, poems and tales -  great variety and value. Only £1 admission (It's In The Bag!).
Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month.
