4th October 2007

What a grand night! We thought it was going to be quiet but we were proved wrong as quite a few turned up after the start-time!. There were 13 acts, and guess what... another newcomer.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Dave Donohoe
began the evening in fine style with a song called 'West Sleekburn' (he'd put music to a local poem) and then 'Angel Tonight'.

Listen

2
Fresh from his extended set last month Keith Jones sang  a railroad song (he didn't tell us the title) and then 'Barbara Allen'.

Newcomer
Robin Lewsey was next... He treated us to the classic 'Crazy Man Michael' by Fairport Convention and Doc Watson's 'Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor'. He's just moved to the area, and we hope he'll become a club regular.

Listen

4
 Derek Greenacre
played the Beatles 'Norwegian Wood' which he followed with a tune of his own, 'Train Tune'.
5
With guitar this evening Tony Hamblin sang two traditional songs 'Nine Times A Night' and 'Night Visiting Song'.

Listen

6
Mike Jessop chose Ashington Folk Club for his first airing of Van Morrison's 'And It Stoned Me'. He followed up with a favourite Tom Paxton song, 'Last Thing On My Mind'.

Bringing the first half to a close was Jim Slaughter with his brand new chromatic harmonica. Great stuff. He played 'The Cuckoo' and rounded off with a short medley.

Listen

8
Paul Allen got the second half underway with his own musical interpretation of a Yeats poem called 'When You Are Old'. Then it was the self-penned 'Golden Days'.
9
Another new song! Jim Wigfield sang 'Shit Goes Downstream' and then 'Hello New Wrinkle'. Where does he get them from, we wonder.

Listen

10
Resident poet Ann Lunam-Cowan recited 'The Dog That Laid The Golden Egg' and then Les Barker's 'Spot Of The Antarctic'.

11
Going back a few years for his first song Dave Anderson sang Don McLean's 'And I Love You So'. Then he sang 'A Little Bit Of Me' written by Ewen Carruthers.

Listen

12
Chris Riley
sang a Davey Graham-ish version of Cyril Tawney's 'Sally Free & Easy' and a Slim Whitman blues song.

13
Finishing up the night Ben Yeowart  was in great form as usual... he sang Dylan's Leopardskin Pill Box Hat' with some of his own improvised words. Then he finished with 'Plastic Jesus' which had the whole room joining in!
