7th June 2007

15 acts tonight... great variety, great atmosphere!

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Getting the evening underway in his own inimitable style Ben Yeowart sang a song for which we didn't get the title. And then, was it the start, or the whole, of an instrumental?

Listen

2
With his banjo for the first time this year Tony Hamblin was next. He sang 'Copper Kettle' and 'Good Old Mountain Dew' which had his fingers 'flying'. Phew!

3
Jim Slaughter played 'Danny Boy' on  harmonica, but unfortunately we didn't get the title of the second one.

Listen

4
Then it was time for some blues with
Derek Greenacre. He played a medley of 'Candy Man', 'You Got The Pocket Book I Got The Key' and 'All My Friends Are Gone', and then a piece called 'Roll & Tumble Blues'.
5
Ashington's answer to Jake Thackray was next in the shape of Keith Jones who sang 'On And On And On Again' which brought a few titters from the audience. Then he did a traditional song, 'The Maid & The Young Volunteer'.

Listen

6
Ray Derrick was next and he sang two self-penned numbers - 'George & Robert Stephenson' and 'It Comes & Goes' (his grumpy old man song as he calls it!).

7
It was
good to see Chris Riley again. He sang the Bert Jansch song 'Running From Home' and then delighted us with his take on 'Hesitation Blues'.

Listen

8
Ellen Morgan was next up with her very blonde maple guitar. She finger-picked and sang 'Red Is The Rose' - upping the tempo for 'Woodstock'.
9
No Paxton songs tonight for Geoff Pickard as he sang John Prine's 'Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness' and the Tim Hardin song 'Reason To Believe'.

Listen

10
Then it was a welcome return for John Campbell with a Dylan song 'Follow You Down' which he followed with 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight'.

Listen

11
We had two unaccompanied songs next from Diane Green - 'Rosemary Lane' and then an old Shaker song, 'How Can I Keep From Singing'.

Listen

12
Ann Lunam-Cowan gave us her own poem 'That Time Of Life' and then Les Barker's 'Pony & Crap'. (My Little Pony will never be the same!)
13
Jackson Browne's 'Fountain of Sorrow' was the first song for
Pat Yeowart and then, accompanied by son Ben on guitar, she sang the club favourite, 'Sinner Man'.

Listen

14
Mike Jessop
caused a few more 'titters' from the audience with 'The Biggest Lass In Byker' and then he did a very fine cover of ... yes... a jiva song 'The Cause'. Thank you Mike, good on yer! But, can Jimmy & Val retire on the regular stream of royalty cheques?

Back with Blue guitar still in DADGAD tuning, Jim Wigfield sang a new  self-penned song called 'When I Fall In Love' which he followed with an instrumental, as yet officially unnamed but provisionally either 'Fiddle On Part II' or 'Ode [Owed?] To The Bank'.
