17 May 2007

A warm evening (when will they turn the heating off!) in the Bothal Suite for a Singers, Musicians & Poets night.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Jim Wigfield began the night playing an instrumental which he called 'Fiddle On The Guitar' and then a new self-penned song 'One Peat Bog Too Far'.

Listen

2
Northumbrian  piper Ann Sessoms was next. For her first set she played two Sue Morgan tunes - 'York Central' and 'Sarah's Waltz'. She followed this with two local hornpipes 'Shields Fair' and 'The Washington' which showcased her deft finger (and thumb!) work.

Then it was time for some Jake Thackray with Keith Jones singing the amusing tale of 'Sister Josephine'. He followed this with the traditional song 'The Trees They Do Grow High'.

Listen

4
Ellen Morgan sang
'Memory' from the Lloyd Webber musical 'Cats'. Then she turned to traditional vein for 'My Love's in Germany', an old Orkney ballad.
5
With the Ralph McTell classic 'Streets Of London' Geoff Pickard was quickly into his stride. Then (in honour of our very own 'cowboy' Jack) he did a yodelling song called 'When It's Peach Pickin' Time in Georgia'.

Listen

6
Time then for our harmonica player
Jim Slaughter who played 'Cuckoo'. He even had the audience singing along with 'Loving Is A Pleasure' - no mean feat at Ashington!
