3rd May 2007

And we thought April was busy... tonight we had a staggering 17 acts... phew! And still more newcomers... keep 'em coming.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Derek Greenacre got the evening underway in fine style with two instrumental pieces, 'Yellow Bird' and then some ragtime with 'West Coat Blues'.

Listen

2
Then Diane Green sang two unaccompanied songs, the lovely 'Raglan Road' and 'The Little Drummer Boy'.

3
Our first new face this evening was Gareth Davies-Jones who treated us to two self-penned numbers 'Butterfly' and 'Older'.

Listen

4

Jack Hakin was in great cowboy mood this evening with two Gene Autrey songs. First was 'Empty Saddles', complete with some whistling, and then 'Deep In The Heart Of Texas' which had the audience clapping along.
5
It's good to have Keith Jones back at the Club regularly. Tonight he sang Jake Thackray's 'Brother Gorilla' and John Conolly's 'Fiddlers Green'.

Listen

6
Jim Slaughter, who is also fast becoming a regular of the Club, complete with harmonica, played 'Just A Song At Twilight' and 'My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean'.

Listen

7
Once again Dave Donohoe showed his deft guitar style as he sang 'Angel Tonight' and Sting's 'Fields Of Gold'.

Listen

8
The Sunshine Boys were our second new act this evening. They entertained us with  'Down To The River To Pray' from the film 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou' and then the Box Car Willie song 'Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms'.
9
With borrowed guitar (he couldn't resist open G tuning) for his first song, Dave Anderson sang Nanci Griffith's 'Love At The Five & Dime' and then the Ewen Carruthers song 'The Amber Room'.

Listen

10
On holiday in the area Syd, our other newcomer, dropped in and sang two unaccompanied songs 'Shallow Brown' and 'The Ploughboy' (appropriate to the recent local elections).

It's been a while since we've seen Geoff Ridley. He sang a song taken from the Methodist Hymn Book (1933 edition) 'Let the Lower Lights Be Burning'. He
followed this with Kate Wolf's 'Safe At Anchor'.

Listen

12
Pat Yeowart gave us an unaccompanied version of the Janis Ian classic 'Jessie'.
13
Then, accompanied on guitar by son Ben, Pat sang the traditional American song 'Sinner Man'.

Listen

14
Ben Yeowart on his own next, sang Syd Barrett's 'Terrapin' in his own unique style.

15
Club resident poet Ann Lunam-Cowan began with her own poem 'One Of Them' and then gave us the Les Barker poem 'The Folk Club Disaster'.

Listen

16
Mike Jessop
was next with Eric Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight' and then Alan Hull's 'We Can Swing Together' (briefly - and unexpectedly and totally unrehearsed -  joined on vocals by sound man Jimmy - but that's another story)...
17
Finishing up the evening was Geoff Pickard who sang Tom Paxton's 'Passing Dreams' and then a song about seamen being alternately 'Outward Bound' and 'Homeward Bound'.

Listen

17 acts, 31 songs and tunes and poems - great entertainment and all for just  £1 !
