19th April 2007

Another great turnout of performers this evening - and another smashing evening of varied entertainment...

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Getting the night underway saw Keith Jones singing Jake Thackray's 'The Hole' and then the equally humorous song 'The Portuguese'.

Listen

2
Some unaccompanied singing next with Diane Green who sang two traditional songs 'Dark Eyed Sailor' and 'Bonny At Morn'.

Listen

Listen

3
Tony Hamblin, with guitar again, sang 'Sir Patrick Spence' and followed this with a bluesy number which he thinks is called 'My Heart's Got Sorrow'.

Listen

4
Back with a Paxton song 'Leaving London' was Geoff Pickard. He then sang a traditional song, 'When Jones' Ale Was New'.
5
Jack Hakin sang Micky Newbury's 'American Trilogy' (whistling the opening lines)  and then 'The Union Mare & The Confederate Grey' (complete with horse hooves sound effects!).

Listen

6
And then with harmonica, Jim Slaughter played two tunes, 'Cuckoo' and then 'She Had My Ring'.

Listen

Listen

7
Ann Lunan-Cowan
had us in contemplative mood with her poem 'Not Old - Not Me'  which she followed with Les Barker's amusing story about the Dachshund not being able to climb the stairs!'

Listen

8
First time at the Club for Dave and Dave who also advertised the upcoming Allan Taylor concert at the Tyne Journal Theatre on 5th May. They played two tunes - 'Arthur's Missing Millions' and one without a name.
9
Good to see Dennis Jorgensen at the Club again. He sang 'Goodnight Irene'  (an American folk standard popularised by Lead Belly who learned it from his uncle). Dennis then sang a heart-rending song based on a First World War poem to which he had added a tune.

Listen

10
Accompanied on guitar by son Ben, Pat Yeowart sang a Bob Dylan song 'I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine'.

Listen

Listen

11
Then on his own Ben Yeowart
played an instrumental. Unfortunately we didn't get the name of it - Ben's introductory quip being 'Don't speak unless you've got something to say'...

Listen

12
Jim Wigfield
sang two self-penned songs 'Yeavering Bell' and then, regaling us with just some of his pet hates, 'State Of The Nation'.
13
Good to have
Dave Donohoe back again - he sang a song about fast cars (BMW and Mercedes) and then Seth Lakeman's 'Riflemen Of War'.

Listen

14
Mike Jessop
(who had a sizeable birthday recently!) finished the night in fine style.  For Jimmy  he sang 'Bankers Blues' (taken from a Rory Gallagher album), then - dedicating the last song of the night to Val - Bob Dylan's 'Blowin' In The Wind'.

Listen

14 acts, 26 songs and tunes and poems - another good mix...

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday and 3rd Thursday of every month.
