5th April 2007

There was a great turnout of performers this evening - we had a very interesting mix including classics, gospel, singer/songwriter, political, traditional, American, country, ragtime, blues, unaccompanied, harmonica and classical guitar... phew!

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Ellen Morgan began the evening with 'Killing Me Softly' written by Lauryn Hill, but made famous by Roberta Flack and then sang the Billie Holiday song 'Those Foolish Things'.

Listen

2
Then it was the turn of Jack Hakin who reminded us all what Easter is actually about with George Bernard's 'The Old Rugged Cross'. He followed this with the Hank Williams song 'I Saw The Light'.

3
It was good to see
Dave Donohoe again. He sang Seth Lakeman's song 'The White Horse' and then the beautiful Ralph McTell song 'Clare To Here'.

Listen

4
 Mike Jessop
was next - he sang the well known Christy Moore song 'Ride On'. Then, with a word or two about politics(!), he gave us Allan Hull's 'Malvinas Melody'.
5
It's holiday time from guitar night class and so it was good to see Doug Wood at the Club - with new banjo as well! He sang a Pete Seeger song and then the traditional 'Little Liza Jane'.

Listen

6
Closing the first half, Dave Anderson sang the Nanci Griffith song 'Love At The Five And Dime' followed by 'Must Be Love I'm Feeling'.

Listen

Listen

7
Derek Greenacre
started the second half with two self-penned tunes. The first was 'Upsala Rag', inspired by playing a Levin guitar many years ago, and then 'Reivers Revenge'

Listen

8
Second time at the club for Chris who sang 'The Fox' and a folky favourite, 'Wild Mountain Thyme'.
9
Geoff Pickard
began with Ralph McTell's 'Streets of London' before showing his adept blues playing with a Doc Watson number, 'Deep River Blues'.

Listen

10
Keith Jones
has been absent far too long but it seems he's been busy - he announced his engagement to get married! He did the Jake Thackray song 'Bantam Cock' and then Simon and Garfunkel's 'Homeward Bound'.

Listen

Listen

11
Unaccompanied tonight, Pat Yeowart
began with Leonard Cohen's 'Bernadette' and finished in style with club favourite 'Summertime'.

Listen

12
Jim Slaughter
came back with his harmonica and treated us to two fine tunes - 'Plaisir D' Amour' and 'My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean'.
13
We don't see Alex Okon very often these days, so it was a special pleasure to have two classical guitar pieces from him tonight.

Listen

14
Jim Wigfield finished the night with two self-penned songs 'State Of The Nation' (more taxes and politics), and 'Fruity Teas'... we had no idea there were so many different flavoured teas to be had!

Listen

14 acts, 28 songs and tunes - quite a mix... you just never know what you might get next.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday and 3rd Thursday of every month.
