1st March 2007

Tonight Ashington saw more new performers and audience too. Great to see you all. And, there was reminiscing for Jack Hakin when new performer Jim turned up - they had not seen each other since the war years!

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1 & 14
Al Giles got the night underway with 'A Sailor's Life' and a local lullaby called 'Dolly-Ah' and in his second spot (from the singing of Jack Elliot) 'Sammy Jones'.

Listen

2 & 15
Newcomer Ross Forster (a member of The Devitos) was up next  and in his first turn sang two of his own songs 'The Road' and (only written that day) 'Are Your Walls Too High'. Second time around another self-penned song 'Hallelujah Now'. We hope to hear more from Ross and perhaps The Devitos too.

Diane Green was third in the first half with the mining song 'Rapper T' Bank' and 'We'll Go No More A-Roving' (lyrics courtesy of George Gordon [Lord] Byron). After the break she returned with 'Raggle Taggle Gypsys'.

Listen

4 & 13
With a few yodels thrown in Jack Hakin sang Slim Whitman's 'I'm A Fool' and followed this with 'The Old Rockin' Chair'. Jack came back later and sang 'Fool's Paradise', a sad tale about a goings on in a wild west bar.
5 & 10
Second newcomer of the night was Jim who gave us a few tunes on his harmonica - 'Shenendoah' and 'Merrily We Roll Along'. He returned with another tune in the second half, playing Rabbie Burns' 'Aften Water'. Great stuff - we look forward to hearing more.

Listen

6 & 11
Tony Hamblin, with guitar again,   sang (from the Nic Jones version) 'Annan Water' (how does he remember all those words!) and then with his own interpretation from a Bonnie Raitt version of the Richard Thompson song 'Dimming Of The Day'. In the second half he sang 'Go To Sea No More'.

Another newcomer (at least to singing at Ashington) was Pauline Giles
who sang a whaling song called 'The Home Of The Whale'. Hope we hear more from Pauline.

Listen

8 & 17
Finishing off the first half was Geoff Pickard who sang 'Palais Girl' and John Prine's 'Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness'. He also finished the night with Tom Paxton's 'Troubadour' and a very quick 'Uncle George And Aunty Mabel'...
12
On her own this evening Pat
Yeowart sang an American traditional song about mining called 'Red & Black' and then the bluesy number 'Lover Man''.

In  mischievous mood, and without guitar this evening, Ben Yeowart came to the mike (without warning and so we had no time to take a picture) and... well, you had to be there... honestly.

Ben was so quick he took our resident photographer by surprise. So, alas no photo.
Listen

10 acts, 26 songs and tunes - quite a mix... you just never know what might happen next.
