15 February 2007

A busy night - it was the first Bothal Suite Singers, Musicians & Poets night - and it was good to see so many of you there. A few newcomers as well - let's hope they return soon.

Also... an announcement (Listen here) by hosts, jiva, of their intention to step down as club organisers at the end of 2007.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1
Tony Hamblin began the night playing guitar! A surprise Christmas present from his wife. He began with an instrumental 'Tune in G' by Antonio Charles (who could that be!) following on with the traditional song 'Botany Bay'.

2
First Northumbrian  piper of the night was Alan Bailey who played 'Rowantree Hill' and 'Newcastle Station' - we will get him to do two sets one of these nights!

First time performer Barry Purdy was up next with Tim Hardin's 'Black Sheep Boy'. Let's hope we hear more from Barry at the club.

4
It was good to see Diane Green again and tonight she sang the traditional song 'I Drew My Ship'.
5
Ellen
was next  with her own take on the classic 'Woodstock' (she calls it a cross between Matthews Southern Comfort and Joni Mitchell). She followed this with the traditional 'Waters Of Tyne'.

Listen

6
Another first time performer was
Daniel Purdy (yes, son of Barry!) with the Howie Day song 'Collide'. Again, we look forward to more from Daniel. Well done to both.

Last performer of the first half, Ann Sessoms played  a Welsh air 'Fond Heart' and then two slipjigs 'The Peacock Followed The Hen' and 'Andrew Kerr. She then finished in great style with Johnny Handle's 'Foster Charlton And His Cat' and a Foster Charlton tune 'The North Star'.

8
Getting the second half underway, and in 60s mood tonight, John Campbell began with The Beatles song  'Can't Buy Me Love' and then The Doors classic 'Come On Baby, Light My Fire'.
9
Third newcomer of the night was Chris, continuing the 60s mood as he sang the Jackson C Frank song 'Blues Run The Game' and then a self-penned song called 'Monday Song' (written on a Monday!).

Listen

10
Best known at the club for singing Allan Hull covers, Mike Jessop
sang two non-Hull songs tonight. First, Sandy Denny's classic 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' dedicated to a friend who was unable to be there, and then Dylan's 'Girl From The North Country'.

Time for some poetry - Ann Lunam-Cowan began with her own poem 'Nostalgia's Not What It Used To Be'
and then, Les Barker's 'I Can't Find Me Camouflage Net'.

Listen

12
In good form Pat Yeowart with Ben  sang Dylan's 'Oh Sister' and the Lieber and Stoller classic 'Love Potion #9' made famous, Pat tells us, by (among others) The Searchers in the 1960s.
13
Ben Yeowart
stayed on stage and was asked to do three. He began with two instrumentals 'Would' (or was it 'Wood'?),and 'Desperation'. He then sang the Syd Barrett song 'Fishes' finally bursting into one verse of 'Goodnight Irene'!!

Listen

14
Finishing the night was Geoff Pickard who sang Tom Paxton's 'Annie's Song' and then a self-penned song 'Busker Bill - A Day In The Life Of A Musical Tramp'.
