07 December 2006

An unusually quiet night - no PA. We experimented with another informal acoustic night, therefore there are no recordings of performers this week... so if you missed it, you really missed it!

1
Being an acoustic night allowed
jiva to play (no-one needed to look after the PA). They started the night with Nanci Griffith's 'Love At The Five And Dime' followed by their own theme song 'One More Song'. After 3 years of running the club they finally get their own spotlight night, so don't miss 21st December.

Unfortunately no-one took a photo of jiva performing, so we'll have to make do with this plain background.

2
Dave Donohoe was up next. With downtuned guitar he performed his own arrangement of a local poem 'Hole In The Ground' and then Bob Dylan's 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue'.

3
Denis Jorgensen is becoming a regular visitor to the club - even bringing his own foldaway stool for guitar playing... he sang Martin Nesbitt's 'Hey Mr Yesterday' and the humorous 'Teaching My Worm How To Swim'.

4
Then Pat & Kevin gave us 'Blues In The Night' as sung by Anne Shelton. Pat then produced a weird percussion instrument which she christened 'Clackers' to provide finger-clicking accompaniment to 'Fever'.
5
Two poems from Ann Lunam-Cowan had us chuckling - the first was her own 'My Mother Said' complete with actions, and the second was Les Barker's 'Jason And The Arguments'... tee hee.

6
Ending
the first half with classical guitar we had Alex Okon who gave us a 'Spanish Dance' and the oft-requested 'Romanza'.

7
Jack Hakin got the second half underway in his own inimitable country style with 'Hey Good Looking' and then some fine-spirited yodelling!

8
A brace of Alan Hull songs next - Mike and Hazel gave guitar and recorder accompaniment to 'Picture A Little Girl', and Mike soloed on 'Marshall Riley's Army'.
9
Derek Greenacre
would have brought a louder guitar if he'd remembered it was an acoustic night - but we heard his tunes OK... a Big Bill Broonzy arrangement of 'Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey' and the self-penned 'Linton Reel'.

10
In reminiscing mood,
Tony Hamblin sang 'Martin Said To His Man' and then 'The Dalesman's Litany'.

11
Geoff Pickard (sporting a new parlour sized guitar) sang 'Palais Girl' and 'If That Is What You Want'. Geoff, now a regular Ashington performer, will be doing a support slot for Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby in the new year.

12
Closing the night in his usual impish style Ben Yeowart sang Syd Barrett's 'Obvious' and 'Fishes (My Hair's On End About You)'.
12 acts - 24 songs, tunes and poems - as always, a night of varied styles and instruments. And great value at only £1 admission (It's In The Bag!)

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st  and 3rd Thursday of every month - and don't forget, our last night of 2006 will be the long-awaited jiva spotlight on 21st December... be there!

Ssshhh... the secret's out...
