02 November 2006

A quiet night for the Club but the usual eclectic mix of styles including Derek Greenacre on recorder!

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1 & 10
Getting the night underway was Jack Hakin who began with two songs by Don Williams 'Lay Down Beside Me' and 'Living On Tulsa Time'. In the second half he gave us Slim Whitman's 'I'm A Fool' along with a bit of yodelling!

2 & 12
Derek Greenacre played 'Rag In G Number 1' which he tells us he learnt from Mick Darwin of the Amazing Bean Bag Band from the early days of the Club. Known more for his blues playing he surprised us by then playing a Bill Conroy whistle tune on the recorder. What next we wonder? For his second spot it was back to normal as he played 'Twelve Sticks' by Rev Gary Davis.

Having won a Dougie MacLean CD recently
Jim Wigfield has been learning some new songs. He began with a very Scottish song from the album which he followed with a self-penned song written for his mother simply called, 'She Was My Mother'. He returned later with another of his own songs 'Changing The World'.

Listen

4 & 9
It was good to see Geoff Pickard again and tonight he sang the humorous 'They Don't Write Them Like That Any More' and then, Tom Paxton's 'Wish I Had A Troubadour'. Then it was another Paxton song, 'Last Thing On My Mind' for his second turn.
5 & 11
Tony Hamblin was up next and, with banjo in hand, sang a song lamenting the loss of the canal industry. Then he gave us an unaccompanied traditional song. The very lively 'Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms' was the choice for his second turn.

Ending
the first half were Pat and Kevin. Tonight they performed Eva Cassidy's 'I Know You By Heart', and the classic 'Lover Man'. In the second half we had Jackson Browne's 'Fountain Of Sorrow' and they ended the night with Hoagy Carmichael's 'The Nearness Of You'.
