21st September 2006

Another Double Spotlight evening, this time showcasing Doug Wood on Banjo and Alex Okon classical  guitar. Each did a short spot in the first half and then again in the second half. It was a good evening of mixed entertainment with country, contemporary, Northumbrian pipes and classical - such a good mix at Ashington Folk Club.

Be sure to get yourselves along to support and enjoy these special evenings...

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

I'm Gonna Pick My Banjo
Full song performed by Doug Wood
La Paloma
Full piece performed by Alex Okon
1
Tony Hamblin began the evening with two songs of the sea. First was 'Henry Martin' and then a rousing 'Whip Jamboree'.

Listen

2
First Northumbrian piper this evening was Ann Sessoms who played some fine tunes.  First up was 'Robins Waltz' followed by 'Never Love Thee More/Sunderland Lasses/Lads of Alnwick'. Ann will be in the Spotlight in October - be there!

It was good to see Ray Derrick
again, He sang two self-penned songs 'Mines of Cramlington' and 'It Comes and Goes' (as he puts it "my grumpy old man song").

4 Spotlight
First Spotlight performer was Doug Wood  who began in great form with (quite appropriately)
'I'm Gonna Pick My Banjo'. Tracing the development of American music he continued with 'Angelina Baker' followed by the classic 'Oh Suzannah'.  He followed this with a Confederate song 'Rock That Cradle Julie' and then 'Cripple Creek' and 'New River Train'. He finished his first spot with 'When The Train Comes Long'.  Great stuff!

5 Spotlight
Alex Okon had a new guitar with him and it sounded good! He began with two solo pieces we've not heard before, and was then joined by Jan on keyboard. They played Corelli's 'The Valze', 'Romanza',  Bach's Cantata 147 'Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring' - and finished off a great first half with Vivaldi's concerto in D Major.

Listen

6
Kicking the second half was  Pete Cryer (one half of Old English). By now time was against us so, with shorter introductions, he sang two traditional songs 'As I Walked Out' and 'Lord Franklin'

Listen

Listen

7
Dave Donohoe
sang 'Memphis Blue' (strangely enough, about a pack of cigarettes), and then 'Back To The Country'.

Listen

8
More Northumbrian pipes with
Alan Bailey who played 'Rowan Tree Hill' and 'The New York Hornpipe'.
9
It was the turn of Pat & Kevin next. Tonight it was Janis Ian's classic 'At 17' followed by Sandy Denny's equally classic 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'.

Listen

10 Spotlight
Alex Okon returned (by himself) for his second spot of the evening. He played a Spanish dance followed by favourites  'La Grima', Yradier's 'La Paloma', and  finished a great night for him with 'Habanera'.

Listen

11 Spotlight
Doug Wood was in fine form as he rattled off 'Goodbye Murshin Durkin',  Woody Guthrie's 'Rambling Blues', 'Dooley', 'Sally Don't You Grieve', 'Get Along Home Cindy' and 'Good Old Mountain Dew'.
