17th August 2006

It was a Double Spotlight evening showcasing Jack Hakin in the first half and Old English in the second. Contrasting styles of country and traditional folk blended well with the great mix of classical, blues, contemporary and Northumbrian Pipes.

Be sure to get yourselves along to support and enjoy these special evenings...

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

I'm Sorry For You My Friend

To kick off this evening we had
classical music from Alex Okon with club favourites 'La Grima' followed by 'La Paloma'. Don't forget Alex will be sharing the Spotlight in September with Doug Wood.

Dave Donohoe began with some neat bottleneck playing 'In My BMW', as he put it, "one of those silly songs". He followed this with Sting's 'Fields of Barley'.

4 Spotlight
First Spotlight performer Jack Hakin  was grandly dressed in cowboy shirt and boots for the event. He began with Slim Whitman's 'Ghost Riders In The Sky'. Then came three Marty Robbins' songs - 'Big Iron', 'Running Gun' and 'Man Walks Among Us'. Especially for Doug Yeowart he then sang the Hank Williams songs 'Jambalaya' and  'I'm Sorry For You My Friend'. In philosophical vein he continued with '
I Wish It Could Be The Way It Used To Be' followed by 'I'm A Fool'  finishing off with 'Rocking Alone In An Old Rocking Chair' by Bob Miller. Well done Jack!

5
Getting the second half underway was
Northumbrian Piper Ann Sessoms who played the Scottish fiddle tune 'Wild Rose Of The Mountain followed by 3 jigs.

Listen

6
Fresh from his own Spotlight last month, John Campbell sang  'Stop, Hey What's That Sound' (a Steven Stills song from his Buffalo Springfield days).

Jim Wigfield works outdoors, and is often inspired by nature. In a David Attenborough moment he wrote 'Butterflies', which he performed for us tonight..

Listen

8
With Taylor guitar in open 'C' tuning Dave Anderson sang a delicate and introspective self-penned song 'Just Good Friends'.
9
Kevin played solo this evening. At the request of Alex he played  the 'Romanza' - two classical guitarists in one evening... magic!

Listen

10 Spotlight
Old English gave us a fine selection of traditional songs beginning with 'The Tinker'. Then they segued 'Sauve' with 'Some Tyrant' followed by 'Byker Hill'. Next was the classic Cyril Tawney song 'Sally Free And Easy'. They continued with 'Labouring Men' and the much requested 'Bell Ringing Song'. They closed the night with 'Radcliffe Highway'... a grand set!

Listen

A double spotlight night,  8 floor spots, 27 songs and tunes and all for only £1 (remember, 'It's In The Bag').

You always get great value at Ashington Folk Club as it continues to give its regular performers the opportunity to showcase their talent.
