3rd August 2006

It was a fairly quiet night but that was OK - it meant some performers were able to have more than one turn for a change.

There was a good mix of contemporary, country and poetry.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of the performers.

1 & 10
Dave Donohoe got the night underway with the classic Ralph McTell song 'Clare To Here' which he followed with Dylan's 'Girl Of The North Country'. In his second turn we were treated to Christine McVie's  'Songbird'.

Listen

2 & 13
Then it was the turn of Jim Wigfield who gave us a new song called 'Who Will You Trust In The Morning' (about the Israeli conflict) and then, having won the Dougie MacLean CD in the raffle last month,  he sang  'Over My Mountain'. He finished off the night for us with another of his own songs 'The Chicken Song'.

Mike Jessop was up next and he sang Tom Paxton's 'Last Thing On My Mind' which he followed with a favourite of his, Alan Hull's 'Winter Song'. Mum and Dad came along too and had a thoroughly good time.

Listen

4 & 11
From Mike Jessop to a full ensemble of Jane's Alley. They did the blues number 'One Way Boy Blues' and then a self-penned song 'Going Back to Louisiana'. In their second spot we had another self-penned song 'Ramona's Blues'.
5 & 12
Dennis Jorgensen was up next. Our intrepid club organisers know Dennis from other clubs but it was his very first visit to Ashington! And very welcome too. He sang Archie Brown's 'A Hole In It' followed by a somewhat risqué song about 'safe sex'! For his second turn he sang 'Puff The Magic Dragon'! He's promised to come again. We look forward to it.

Listen

Val the MC
Taking a rest between performers Val just about manages to climb up on the tall stool.

Certainly looks as though she's having fun !

Get yourselves along and see what it's all about.

Listen

6
Getting the second half underway was Jack Hakin who sang Don Williams' 'Love Me Tonight' and then 'Driftin' Cowpoke' (complete with fine yodelling) by the late Keith Manifold.

Listen

7
Pat and Kevin were in good form and tonight sang two classic songs - 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' and 'Way Over Yonder'.
8
F
resh from Rothbury (a very credible third this year) Ann Lunam-Cowan, treated us to her new poem 'Not Owld, Not Me'.

Listen

9
Ben Yeowart (without Tristan this week) sang Syd Barrett's 'Wined & Dined' followed by a somewhat short version of Dylan's song 'New Pony.'

Listen

9 acts, 20 songs and a poem -  it's great value. Only £1 admission (It's In The Bag!)

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

 What else can we say?
Thank you, one and all...
