20th July 2006
Windows
thrown wide, curtains open and door ajar. At the risk of being repetitive it was -
again - warm and sultry!
We had 9
floor spots with a mix of classics, self-penned material and three sets of
Northumbrian pipers - great stuff!
In the
Spotlight was John Campbell who gave us a great first set solo, then he was joined by harmonica player John Kaye for
a super second set. Some great classics
and some great blues - it was a good night enjoyed by all.
You can Listen
to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

Starting the night Jim Wigfield sang two self-penned songs
- 'Cumulus' and 'The Happy Clappy Song' which had
everyone clapping along. Great fun! |
|
|
2
We had a bevy of Northumbrian
pipers this evening, first of whom was Alan Bailey. He played 'Fanny Powers' and 'Bealby's Hornpipe'. |

Pat & Kevin,
gave us the lovely Sting song 'Fields of Gold' followed by Dylan's
'Farewell Angelina'. |

|
4
Then it was the turn of Jack
Hakin who was yodelling and whistling tonight with
'Montana Moon' and a very sad Hank Williams song 'You
Win Again'. |

Spotlight
John Campbell
had a great mix of Bowie, Dylan,
Queen
and some well known classics
in his first his set. He sang 'Ziggy Stardust', 'It's All Over Now Baby
Blue', 'Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay', 'Girl From Ipanema' and 'We
Are The Champions'. Then there was Tim Hardin's 'Reason To
Believe', followed by a segue of Lieber & Stoller's 'Three Cool Cats' and
'Love
Potion #9'. He finished a great first half with the song 'Wayfaring
Stranger'. |
|
|

With Northumbrian Pipes and mandocello
Lynn & Rob
began the second half in great style with two Irish polkas which featured in the film 'Titanic'.
Their next tuneset was 'Bally
Desmond' and 'Morpeth Lasses'. |

Mike Jessop
was next up with an Alan Hull song 'Malvinas Melody' which he told
us was banned by the BBC for its anti-war stance when it was released
as a single in 1982. |
|
|
|
8
A new duo (as our MC put it)
but corrected by them to 'an old duo' was Ben Yeowart and Tristan Sturgeon
who sang 'Wined & Dined' in memory of Syd Barrett. |
|
9
After the raffle (thanks Mike for the extra prize)
was fine Northumbrian Piper Ann Sessoms
who played 'Rowan Tree Hill / Over The Border / Drops of Brandy' and then
two local hornpipes 'Shields Fair / The Washington'. |
|
|
10
Dave Donohoe
was the final floorspot before, as he put it, "let's get John back
on" - and he sang Neil Young's 'Back To The Country'. |

Spotlight
For his second set
John Campbell was joined by
John Kaye on harmonica, and we were
treated to some more great songs with a bluesy emphasis. The set included 'On
The Road Again',
the Willie Dixon song 'Hoochie Coochie Man', 'Walking The Dog' by
Rufus Thomas and Slim Harpo's 'I'm A King Bee'. He followed these with
Robert Nighthawk's 'I'm Getting Tired', 'Mobile And Texas Line' (Tom
Rush), Howling Wolf's 'Killing Floor', rounding off with Muddy Waters'
'Mojo Working'.
With shouts for 'more' he encored with 'Cocaine
Blues'. |
