18th May 2006

It was a very warm night in the Bothal Suite. In the Spotlight this evening was local singer/songwriter Dave Anderson who performed a mixture of self-penned songs together with some Mike Silver and Ewan Carruthers material.

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

Dave Donohoe began the evening in his own lovely gentle style with Ralph McTell's 'Clare To Here' and then Bob Dylan's 'I Shall Be Released'.

We were then treated to 'Rothbury Hills' from our first Northumbrian piper, Alan Bailey.

Jim Wigfield did two self-penned songs 'Changing The World'  (which hasn't changed the world yet, but we live in hope), and 'The Chicken Song', complete with chicken noises!

In the Spotlight Dave Anderson performed a set of self-penned songs. Dave's craft was evident from the beginning as he started with 'The Legacy' (title track of his partially completed CD) and then 'The Story Teller'. He continued with 'Northumberland', a song about his home county, then 'You & Me' written in the 1970s for his parents. He closed his first set with the wistful 'Turning Round'.

Back from her USA holidays
Ann Sessoms was in great form as she played 'Curlews Return' and then a set of three Scottish tunes 'Joan's Tune' / 'Kelso Fiddle and Accordion Club' / 'Linda McFarlane'.

6
Alex Okon
played 'The Romanza' and followed with 'La Paloma' - always a club favourite.

With a new self-penned song Ben Yeowart sang 'This Is All It Is' and then the Beatle's number 'Her Majesty's A Pretty Nice Girl'. As MC Val put it, "You never know what he'll do next!"

8 Spotlight
For his second set Dave Anderson continued with his own songs and began with 'I Did It All For Love', 'When I First Heard Love's Sweet Song' and 'Falling From Grace'. He then moved onto some covers performing Ewan Carruthers' 'Back To The Borders', Mike Silver's 'Fragile Peace' and the classic 'Today While The Blossom Still Clings To The Vine'. He returned to his own material with the beautiful 'Take A Little Time' and encored with 'A Little Bit Of Me' by Ewan Carruthers.
A spotlight act, 6  floor spots, 24 songs and tunes and all for only £1 (remember, 'It's In The Bag'). Great music, great value...

Ashington Folk Club continues to give regular visitors the opportunity to showcase their talent in a warm, friendly and appreciative environment throughout 2006. Be there...

Another super Spotlight
Thanks, Dave
Thanks everyone...
