16th March 2006

We had an absolute feast of instrumentalists this evening - Northumbrian and Irish pipe tunes, guitar classics, classical, contemporary, 12 bar blues - you name it, it was all there.

In the Spotlight was Vince Carr who performed a mixture of instrumental pieces and songs in his first set - he was joined in the second half by his brother Ed. They gave us a heady mixture of instrumental pieces ranging from classical to contemporary and everywhere in between!

And our new speakers sounded great! (Jimmy's deft touch on sound might have had something to do with it too...)

You can Listen to an mp3 Soundbite of each performer, and...

Almost Cut My Hair
Full song performed by Vince Carr
Music For A Found Harmonium

Getting the evening underway in fine style was Dave Donohoe with 'Rusty' and then his own song about the demise of the corner shop '6 To 6'. Dave will be sharing the Spotlight with Ben Yeowart on 20 April.

4 Spotlight
Spotlight performer Vince Carr  began in gentle style with a self-penned instrumental tune called 'Bamburgh Sands'. Then he sang Richard Thompson's 'Shame Of Doing Wrong' and David Crosby's 'Almost Cut My Hair'. Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides Now' was done as an instrumental and he followed this with a self-penned song 'Strolling Early Morning'. He finished his first set with another self-penned tune about Seaton Sluice called 'Dene Song'.

The second half was started by Northumbrian Piper Alan Bailey who  played two Irish tunes in honour of the forthcoming St Patrick's Day.

Then it was the turn of Dave Anderson
, who sang his own songs - 'Take A Little Time' (a beautiful number written for two friends) and 'Not Enough Falling In Love' (an up tempo number commenting on the human race). There'll be more Anderson originals in his Spotlight on 18 May.

Kevin
was in good form with an old time American tune 'Farewell Blues' which had a ragtime feel. He then played a medley of tunes based on the playing of May Bell Carter.

More 20th century classics from John Campbell as he sang 'I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)' by Bob Dylan and the old chestnut 'Heartbreak Hotel'. Who knows what his spotlight (20 July) will bring?
10 Spotlight
Stepping
into the spotlight Vince & Ed began with an Irish tune 'South Wind'. They then played Vivaldi's 'Concerto in D' which they segued with 'Tune For A Found Harmonium'! They followed this with a gypsy guitar tune (the theme from the TV series Jeeves & Wooster) and Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto. To shouts of 'More' they encored with 'Summertime'.
