Playing
electric guitar, Zak was up first with two gentle contemporary numbers - Eric Clapton's  'Wonderful Tonight' and then the Dire Straits song 'Why Worry'.

Listen

2
Next was Dave Donohoe who sang 'Money' (using a green bottleneck) and 'Angel' by Kevin Montgomery, both very thought-provoking. Watch out for Dave's double bill spotlight with Jack Hakin in April.

With many an innuendo in his first song
Tony Hamblin  gave us 'The Foggy Dew' (unaccompanied) and then with banjo the Bob Dylan song 'The Days of 49'.

Listen

4
Then it was the turn of Kevin with some deft instrumentals. He played a ragtime tune from the Reverend Gary Davis followed by 'Kelly's Blues', a Merle Travis piece .
5
With mandocello and Northumbrian pipes
Rob & Lynn were in good spirits as they played a set of 2-step tunes followed by 'Bally Desmond' and Morpeth Lasses'.

Listen

6
Closing the first half
George Rosenthal was in fine voice with a lovely arrangement of the Dougie McLean song 'Caledonia' and John Prine's 'Hello In There'.

Jack Hakin kicked off the second half with some Country & Western with 'Angels in Heaven' and then a Hank Williams song  'Kaw-Liga' (a Wooden Indian). Don't miss Jack's double bill spotlight with Dave Donohoe.

Listen

8
No long introductions from John Campbell who segued the Kinks classic 'Lazin' On A Sunny Afternoon' with 'Summertime' immediately followed by 'Is You Is, Is You Ain't My Baby'. Less chat, more music... way to go, John.
9
Two Les Barker poems from
Ann Lunam-Cowan raised a few laughs. Tonight she read 'Pearl (The Preying Mantis)' and 'An Infinite Number Of Occasional Tables'.

Listen

10
Pat Yeowart and Kevin were in good form with the Sandy Denny song 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' and then Jackson Browne's 'Fountain Of Sorrow'.

Who else but Ben Yeowart could finish off our opening night? He did his own song 'Laughing In The Corner' and a song which he is making his own - Bob Dylan's 'Leopardskin Pillbox Hat'.

And - as if we'd let you forget - next week there is an additional night for the club with Special Guest Allan Taylor... and even a support slot by jiva... whatever next?
11 acts, 22 songs, tunes and poems - another great night. Get yourself along... for less than the price of a pint you can't go wrong.

Singers, Musicians & Poets nights are held on the 1st Thursday of every month, and there's more of the same but with extended Spotlight sets on the 3rd Thursday.

Unaccompanied, electric & acoustic guitar, mandocello,
Northumbrian pipes, banjo, spoken word...
Traditional, contemporary, classic...
Ashington Folk Club has it all.
