1st April 2004

April Fool's Day marked the third Singers, Musicians & Poets night. Another varied evening with a good mix of traditional and contemporary, unaccompanied and instrumental, poetry and song. Ashington is fast becoming 'the' place to play...

We experimented with a new PA amplifier, courtesy of jiva. Twiddling all the knobs, pressing buttons, adjusting microphones, taking photos for the web, keeping track of performers and MC-ing makes for a very busy night - so, yet again our resident duo didn't get a chance to perform.

Maybe next month? Who knows...

1 & 14
Rob and Lynn introduced themselves as 'Real t' (half of Real to Reel, one of the North East's busiest ceilidh bands). Great instrumentalists, they played mandolin, Northumbrian pipes and a fine flute duet.
2 & 15
Next was Jack with two religious songs for the approaching Easter and a cowboy song with the usual excellent yodelling we've come to love.

3 & 16
We enjoyed Alan at Ashington last month, and were pleased to see him return with his pipes. A problem with the bellows made it impossible to complete his first set... more later.
4 & 17
Ray Derrick is fast becoming a favourite visitor. Tonight he teamed up with Eric in a re-enactment of their Northerners era. Great stuff!
5 & 16
Ann Sessoms again showed virtuosity with Northumbrian pipes, entertaining us with a set of waltzes and 'Twisting The Rope' and 'Haste To The Wedding'.
6 & 18
First time visitor Doug Wood provided some enjoyable North American songs accompanied on his banjo.
7
Pat Yeowart started with a fine unaccompanied version of 'Summertime', and was joined by son Ben on guitar for two more classic songs.
8 & 19
Dolphin regular, Eric Gildea, kept up his tradition of zany songs in his own inimitable style - who else would sing about 'Cows With Guns' and 'Toast'?
9 & 20
Joined by Steve on blues harp for 'Sporting Life Blues', Alan ended both the first half and the night solo with some excellent chorus songs swelled by audience and performers alike.
10
After a short raffle break we were pleased to hear club 'Godfather' Ken Self. Ken and Christine ran the club brilliantly for many years, and it was wonderful to see Ken singing two traditional northern songs.
11
Yet more humorous verse from resident poet Ann Lunam-Cowan. Again she had us laughing and hanging on every word of ' Nee Poem For Rothbury This Year'.
12
Steve & Noeline have recently moved to the area - we hope to hear more of their guitar and vocal arrangements of contemporary classics. Steve is also a mean harmonica player.
13
Tristan and club regular Ben, performed a self-penned song. Watch out for these two - no doubt there are more gems to follow.
16
Ann Sessoms and Alan played a smashing Northumbrian pipe duet... glad to hear that Alan's bellows were by now on top form!
Yet again... 14 acts, 31 songs, tunes, poems. Where else can you get all this? And all for free! Be sure to come along and experience Ashington Folk Club...Singers, Musicians & Poets Nights on the first Thursday of every month.

Thanks to audience and performers for a great night.

Oops, almost forgot...
Thanks, too, to the fledgling PA amplifier
on its first public outing!
