25th March 2004

If you weren't there (and many of you weren't!) you missed a great night. Top of the bill were Stony, a duo from Scarborough who are establishing a reputation as one of the hottest acoustic music acts around. The first half support came from Nova, a bunch of young musicians who wowed us on our previous Singers, Musicians and Poets night. Second half support spot was ably filled by club regular, John 'Doc' Campbell with Harmonica John joining him for his last three numbers.

Nova entertained us with a good selection of tunes. Their youth belies the talent and enthusiasm which typified such a well received performance. Nova are part of 'Southwind' which also includes 'XYZ' (finalists in the BBC Young Folk Awards in 2004).  We are sure to see a lot more of them, and wish Nova well in their future performances.

Stony are:

Their reputation as songwriters and as one of the hottest live duos on the new acoustic music scene is fast growing across the country, and they certainly lived up to the mark with a tremendous performance of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material.

John 'Doc' Campbell provided second half support in his usual laid back style. John is a fine exponent of blues guitar and his choice of material ranged from 'Cambois Beach' to Deep South American. He was joined by Harmonica John for the last three numbers, finishing with a roof-raising version of 'Got My Mojo Working'.

More great music, played with drive and professionalism - particularly memorable was 'Moondance' (which even had some of us dancing!), 'Raggle Taggle Gypsies' (great fun), the beautiful Steve Pitman song 'Almost A Singer' and, for an encore, their own incredible synth-percussion version of the Paul Simon classic 'Me And Julio'. A great end to a memorable night.
