4th March 2004

Wow! What a night - another full house, and a great variety of entertainment. Our second Singers, Musicians & Poets night saw a further increase in the audience and the number of performers. Not a spare seat to be had, and standing room only for latecomers.

Last month it was suggested we should try a night without the PA, so this was an 'unplugged' experiment... on reflection, and based on audience and performer feedback, the room size and acoustics need a PA system to augment the sound. So next month we'll be using the PA again.

1
Peter and Al got the night off to a good start in their 'Old English' style with strong choruses and harmony.
2
Next was Ray Derrick with more choruses and an excellent banjo-playing version of 'My Grandfather's Clock' with everyone joining in.

3
A welcome return by Northumbrian piper Ann Sessoms who delighted us with three sets of tunes.
4
First visit to Ashington for Tony Lamborghini who treated us to bluesy contemporary songs. Tony runs a busker's night at the Dolphin in Tynemouth.
5
Steve Whitehead, another Dolphin regular, sang a mixture of traditional and contemporary songs with gentle guitar accompaniment.
6
First half closed with Nova, five young musicians playing fiddles, flutes and guitar. Their performance of traditional tunes was very much enjoyed.

7
After a short raffle break, Jack entertained us with his infectious country singing and more yodelling too!
8
Next up was Alan, second Northumbrian piper of the evening. He provided us with another fine selection of tunes.
9
Ann Lunam-Cowan had many of us joining in with actions, words and plenty of laughter to her humorous poem, 'My Mother Said'.
10
Our third Dolphin regular, Eric Gildea, says his songs aren't really "Near the knuckle... they're more half way up the arm!"
11
Jim, a former Ashington regular, entertained us with a self-penned song about the north east and a medley of 70s songs.
12
Club resident John ‘Doc’ Campbell did some great blues. We would have liked more, but by now the clock was against us.
13
Ben, another club regular, proved himself to be a great entertainer with an excellent version of 'Leopardskin Pillbox Hat'. He broke a string during his animated guitar playing, and so made a surprise but theatrical exit.
14
Closing spot went to Pat Yeowart with another fine unaccompanied classic song. Alas, closing time came all too soon.
14 acts, 31 songs, tunes, poems. All for free! Can it really get any better? Come along and see for yourself - first Thursday of every month.

Thanks to audience and performers for another memorable night.
